Alongside the role the Vice Dean will play in such transformative initiatives, s/he will direct the development of new capacity in academic, faculty, and student affairs and, with faculty groups and staff, will oversee routine administrative operations in these areas.
The Vice Dean
? Works with and supervises department chairs to determine faculty needs and support academic programs
? Partners with the Dean, Sr. Associate Dean for Finance and Operations, and Department Chairs in budget management and the development of new programs
? Sets norms to continually improve the overall SOE culture for faculty, staff, and students
? Provides additional leadership in SOE efforts to advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice in its environment and programs
? Advocates for the academic mission of the School, the scholarship of teaching and learning, and educational support needs of faculty across educational modalities and programs.
Academic Affairs
? Represents the SOE at the University level and leads SOE implementation of University-wide initiatives related to academic affairs (e.g., through regular meetings with the Vice Deans across Hopkins)
? Collaborates with the Dean's leadership team, including the department chairs, to provide innovative leadership and ensures the integrity of the academic programs
? Provides pedagogical expertise and strategic leadership for academic programs
? Oversees academic policy development
Faculty Affairs
? Partners with the dean to recruit and retain faculty
? Collaborates with Associate Dean for Equity and Faculty Development, faculty search committees, and Dean to support the development and promotion of faculty
? Collaborates with the Dean to identify needed infrastructure and resources to support faculty and academic programs
? Collaborates with Associate Dean for Research to ensure that faculty research needs are identified and met
? Advocates for the needs and interests of faculty
? Oversees the faculty evaluation process
Student Affairs
? Supports the development of a comprehensive approach and resource-base to engage and support students from pre-admission through degree completion
? Works with and supervises the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs & Enrollment Management Services to ensure that students' academic and mental health needs are met
Assessment
?Supervises all SOE accreditation processes by communicating with department chairs, ensuring coordination with accrediting and licensing organizations, and supervising the associated work of the Office for Innovative Learning, Design, and Assessment

Qualifications The Vice Dean will contribute broadly and generously to the School's ongoing growth by drawing on subject-matter expertise and by showing creative, collaborative, empathetic, and sustained leadership. Candidates will possess a strategic orientation towards education as a business and demonstrated success in academic program leadership, including curriculum development and assessment. Candidates will demonstrate a high level of energy, creativity, and initiative, a strong commitment to fostering student learning and excellence in research and teaching, and a record of advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion. Experience supporting faculty development and success, respect for shared governance, and a consultative, transparent leadership style are important attributes, as are the ability to navigate a complex, decentralized institutional culture, a high tolerance for ambiguity, and a solution-focused orientation. The Vice Dean will respect and strengthen the diverse strengths displayed in the School of Education and in the broader Johns Hopkins University community.
Required qualifications
? An earned doctoral degree in Education or a related field
? A record of teaching, research, and service suitable for appointment to the rank of Professor

The Vice Dean's initial appointment will include a renewable multi-year contract. However, the expectation is that the Vice Dean's scholarly record will merit a successful review when the School establishes its tenure system, leading to appointment as a tenured full professor.
