The Neurology Medical Student Educator works with the Neurology Clerkship Director and Associate Dean for Curriculum to develop, implement, evaluate and revise the medical student Neurology clerkship curriculum consistent with the learning objectives of the KSOM and the Neurology clerkship. Monitors overall clerkship-related activities, identifies student academic and clinical issues, and provides direct and indirect teaching and observation of students. Acts as liaison for students, supervising faculty and residents (regardless of site), other members of the health care team, and medical school administrative staff. The Neurology Medical Student Educator reports directly to the Neurology Clerkship Director.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Education:
Masterâs Degree in Nursing, Physician Assistant training, certified training in a Health-Related field or in Education
Minimum Years Experience:
2 years in specialty or combined experience and education in field
Minimum Requirements in Field of Expertise:
Specialty specific certification or other advance practice certification, e.g., current certification from a BRN-approved nurse practitioner program, clinical nurse specialist, or, current certification (PA-C) from the NCCPA and graduation from an ARC-PA-accredited physician assistant program
Recent (within 5 years) clinical experience in field of expertise
Possess an active California State RN/PA License
Possesses qualities, abilities and expertise in:Â
Competency in professional discipline and clinical specialty
Leadership/guidance, assessment, planning and evaluation of student and program performance
Verbal and written communication
Interpretation and application of policies, regulations, regulatory requirements
Develops and manages special departmental projects of the Neurology clerkship and monitors progress towards completion of the project.
Researches, gathers, organizes, interprets, and summarizes data (related to academic and clinical activitiesâreports, proposals, publications, presentations, etc.) for Neurology clerkship director and Associate and Assistant Deans for Curriculum and Student Affairs.
Assists in student relations issues, including retention and remediation.
Establishes and maintains appropriate professional network. Maintains current knowledge of professional/regulatory guidelines, requirements and publications. Attends and participates in professional meetings, conferences, etc. Represents Neurology clerkship as delegated by the Clerkship Director, or Associate and Assistant Deans for Curriculum and Student Affairs, or as appropriate to professional education/clinical practice.
Contributes to the development and enhancement of information systems to support clerkship curriculum, student performance and evaluation and interdepartmental communication.
Serves as a key resource for program and clerkship-related schedules, lectures, activities, and assignments. Interfaces with Neurology Clerkship Coordinator as applicable, faculty/staff and community sites regarding medical student education and core curriculum.
Attends departmental and KSOM committees as assigned.
Curriculum/Program Development:
Assists the program/clerkship director in the development of objectives/competencies, teaching strategies and evaluation of teaching/learning effectiveness. Keeps current with recommendations for proposed curriculum by regulatory agencies and professional organizations.
Assists with the development and revision of student performance evaluation tools.
Assists in the revision of clerkship materials.
Direct Clinical Teaching:
Develops, coordinates and facilitates focused clinical activities relevant to the clerkship.
Assists and evaluates medical studentsâ performance of core competencies related to patient care.
Provides direct instruction, clinical supervision and feedback, and/or coordination of educational and feedback sessions related to Neurology clerkship objectives/competencies.
Reviews and monitors medical studentsâ clinical experiences during clerkship at all training sites, including inpatient and ambulatory sites.
Works with the clerkship director to provide student-centered, individualized teaching plans for the enhancement and/or remediation of clinical skills as needed.
Performs site visits to evaluate appropriateness of the clinical facility/office for medical student education.
Acts as a role model in areas of professional communication: inter-professional interaction, history/interviewing, patient education, and documentation.
Assists in inter-clerkship workshops and tutorials as needed.
Conducts and/or participates in scholarly research/writing as needed.
