Program Manager of Outreach and Student Career Management – Break Through Tech

The George Mason University Department of Computer Science (CS), within the College of Engineering and Computing (CEC), seeks a proactive, organized, self-reliant, and passionate Program Manager of Outreach and Student Career Management for the department's Break Through Tech program and related efforts. About Break Through Tech:

Break Through Tech aims to grow the number and proportion of female students enrolled in Mason's computing degree programs, through a suite of career access activities, community building events and curriculum reforms. The Program Manager will also contribute to broader efforts to increase access to computing degrees among students from underrepresented groups. With over 2000 undergraduate students and a rapidly growing population of graduate students, this position offers tremendous potential to achieve a positive impact for students who are traditionally underrepresented in STEM fields.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide day-to-day management and coordination of the BTT team's activities;
  • Develop strategies for ensuring alignment of BTT's portfolio of activities with BTT's overall student growth targets and other objectives;
  • Work with BTT's Career Access Lead to cultivate new and lasting relationships with tech-related employers, non-profits and government agencies in the DC metropolitan area for the purpose of developing a diverse workforce via internships, sprinternships, networking events and summer guilds;
  • Proactively seek new recruitment opportunities for all incoming female students and students from underrepresented groups in computing fields;
  • Support BTT's Career Access Lead on special women-in-technology events (such as seminars and networking social events) for women students and secure the participation of technology leaders and role models in the workforce;
  • Support BTT's Career Access Lead on the sprinternship program for current and incoming GMU computing students, and high school and community college students in computing;
  • Work with BTT's Diversity and Community Development Lead to develop outreach and recruitment efforts for involving students from local community colleges and high schools in BTT events;
  • Coordinate with relevant efforts in the CEC Dean's office to ensure cohesion on outreach and community-building efforts;
  • Evaluate the programs for career access and opportunities in terms of effectiveness and demographics using surveys as developed by BTT program and focus groups;
  • Function as an integral part of inclusive computing teams within the University, and represent the teams and University in relevant state and national initiatives;
  • Ensure alignment of local objectives with BTT National, with other DEI efforts in the University, and with all relevant stakeholders;
  • Work with the BTT PI on new long-term strategies and programs for supporting female students and students from under-represented groups, and scaling up existing programs; and
  • Develop and submit proposals to secure external funding for existing and new programs.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree, or Bachelor's Degree with significant experience (generally 5-8 years) in an advanced technology industry, higher education, or business administration, with specialization in a relevant area such as consulting, sales/marketing, program management, human resources, talent or workforce development, and/or student services; or any combination of education and experience that equates to the advanced degree;
  • The candidate must be able to work independently and as a member of interdisciplinary teams. The applicant must have proficient analytical, writing, verbal, organizational and computer skills and an ability to work well with students, campus partners, parents, industry leaders and other external stakeholders;
  • Candidates must have a demonstrated knowledge of collaboration tools (Teams, Slack, Google) and proficiency in other communication and office software;
  • The candidate must have a demonstrated commitment to working with diverse student and community populations;
  • Experience leading large programs in academic or corporate environments that have a technology orientation and a focus on talent development and training;
  • Demonstrated effective oral and verbal communication skills, including being a public spokesperson for the programs;
  • Demonstrated ability to build effective bridges between industry and academia; and
  • Demonstrated experience with the following (typically 4+ years):
    • Leading programs in an academic and/or corporate environment having a technology orientation and a focus on talent development and training;
    • Working effectively and maintaining a positive rapport with diverse stakeholders including students, professors, and corporate leaders alike; and
    • Working with college students and innovative programs in higher education.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Interacting effectively with a variety of support units similar to those in a campus environment (such as Events Scheduling, Women in Engineering, Student Affairs, or Office of Diversity and Inclusion).

A Force for Innovation in the Heart of Northern Virginia's Technology Corridor

The College of Engineering and Computing (CEC) at George Mason University is comprised of the Volgenau School of Engineering and a new School of Computing. The College is a fast-growing force for innovation in research and education.
