Position:


As a Hispanic-serving Institution (HSI), inclusiveness and diversity are integral to CSUN's commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and engagement. As of Fall 2020, CSUN enrolls ~40,000 students, where 56% are Latinx, 20.8% are White, 9.3% are Asian American, 4.8% are Black/African American, 0.1% are Native American, and 0.1% are Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander. The successful candidate will help the Department achieve equitable outcomes for all students.

The department of University Counseling Services (UCS) at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) is seeking a psychologist to serve as a Staff Psychologist (Sports Psychologist) in the Student Services Professional, Academic-Related II level. Working under the general supervision of the Director of the University Counseling Services (UCS), the Staff Psychologist (Sports Psychologist) will be responsible for providing counseling and sport psychology services for CSUN's student-athletes at an NCAA Division I University. They will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team of professionals (e.g., UCS colleagues, coaches, administrators, sports medicine professionals) to support the holistic care of student-athletes (e.g., personal, social, emotional, academic, athletic performance) and address their unique clinical and sports performance-based needs. This includes the provision of a range of counseling and clinical services, including initial consultations, individual therapy, group therapy, crisis intervention, and case management, to a diverse student-athlete population; provision of applied sport psychology services related to athletic performance enhancement including services focused on individual mental skills training, communication, leadership, and injury rehabilitation, as well as team building; attendance at team practices and games observation; provide consultation and outreach programming to raise mental health awareness and stigma reduction with diverse student-athletes, as well as on clinical/wellness topic areas specific to student-athletes (e.g., disordered eating, substance use, athletic identity, injuries, career planning and transition); and managing referrals to ensure comprehensive and coordinated care of student-athletes.

The Staff Psychologist (Sports Psychologist) must understand and comply with professional ethics and boundaries; maintain timely documentation of all clinical work in electronic medical record keeping system; attend UCS staff meetings, case conferences, trainings, and retreats; serve on the Athletics Mental Health Committee; and other duties, as assigned.

This position may include limited provision of telemental health services and/or remote work; provision of clinical and outreach services to the general student body; participation in the department's training programs; and consultation with the campus community including faculty and staff.

Successful candidates will be held to the standards and requirements of the department in which they are housed.

Required Qualifications:
  • Doctoral degree in Clinical or Counseling Psychology, or related field.
  • Eligibility for licensure in the State of California as a psychologist. If unlicensed, must become licensed within 24 months of employment. If licensed within another state, must obtain licensure in California within one year.
  • Supervised internship experience (or minimum of one year of work equivalent) in university counseling center, mental health agency, or related professional setting, with ability to support the mental health, well-being, and academic success of students.
  • Demonstrated generalist clinical therapeutic and diagnostic skills including the ability to provide clinical assessment and intakes; individual therapy; psycho-educational workshops; and outreach services.
  • Demonstrated experience in the provision of crisis/urgent care services and clinical case management.
  • Demonstrated applied sport psychology experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to multiculturalism and ability to work effectively with diverse individuals (e.g., race, ethnicity, culture, gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, religion, spirituality, ability differences, age, national origin, immigration status, language).
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate within a multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals and athletic high-performance team
  • Demonstrated understanding of professional ethics and boundaries.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem-solve, maintain confidential information, and navigate nuanced situations.
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills and ability to engage in effective time management.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Doctoral degree from an academic program accredited by the American Psychological Association with successful completion of an accredited pre-doctoral internship program.
  • Current licensure in the State of California as psychologist.
  • Degree in sports psychology or degree with a focus on sports psychology.
  • Certification as a Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology or actively working toward certification.
  • Two years of experience (can include internship) providing mental health counseling and sports performance enhancement services to NCAA Division I student-athletes, preferably in a university or college counseling center setting.
  • Experience working with the specific needs of collegiate student-athletes and in consulting with sports medicine professionals, coaches, and other athletics staff.
  • Skills, knowledge, and experience specifically focused on the needs of students of color, students from indigenous communities, LGBTQ students, international students, undocumented students, and first-generation college students.
  • Experience in university counseling center settings.
