Summary of Duties:
Under general direction, the Medical Coding Specialist is responsible for performing specialized and technical duties in support of the Cougar Health Services billing department. The duties of the position include, but are not limited to: reviewing medical records to ensure accurate diagnostic and procedure codes, monitoring regulatory and policy requirements that affect coding information, performing data entry and abstracting pertinent data from medical records to ensure data integrity and optimal reimbursement, reviewing medical records to recommend and make appropriate corrections. This position will train health care providers and staff on codes and services, answering telephones, processing and preparing charge documents. submitting claims to various third party payers and state and federal agencies, obtaining prior authorizations and scheduling referral appointments, establishing eligibility, processing medical and pharmacy remittance advices, maintaining assigned insurance accounts receivables, evaluate patient financial status, and other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Associate's degree AND at least two (2) years of experience in medical coding, medical billing, medical policy making or fee schedule creation with an emphasis on diagnosis coding AND current certification as a Certified Professional Coder with the American Association of Professional Coders (or equivalent) or ability to obtain certification within two (2) years of hire OR equivalent education/experience.
Demonstrated experience using MS Office applications, such as Word, Excel, Outlook and/or Access.
Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated strong customer service skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of medical terminology.
Knowledge and use of Electronic Health Records.
Documented on-the-job experience in a medical clinic.
Experience working with or knowledge of the RCW (chapter 70.02) and the HIPAA of 1996, pertaining to the release of protected health information.

Successful candidates typically begin at the beginning of the salary range and receive scheduled salary increment increases in accordance with WAC 357-28.
