Position Summary

In collaboration with, and under the direction of, the Division of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity, the Director provides leadership and long-range planning for the Pride Center. The Director of the Pride Center leads innovative efforts to provide an integrated approach to identifying, developing, implementing, and evaluating programs and practices directed toward improving LGBTQIA student outreach and yield, academic success, leadership and professional development, inclusion and retention, and enrichment of the overall LQBTQIA student experience. The director provides creative leadership, strategic planning, and vision regarding the role the Pride Center plays in support of the academic and public service mission of San Diego State University. The Director of the Pride Center collaborates with the Division of Student Affairs, Division of Academic Affairs, the Division of Diversity and Innovation, students, staff, and campus/community partners to implement training, programs, and services of the Center.

This position will represent SDSU to external community and governmental organizations. This position will/may be called upon as a resource in responding to sensitive equity, crisis, and individualized issues as they relate to LGBTQIA students. This position will serve as a mentor and advisor to students, and a resource to other faculty/staff positions on campus. This position will work with interns and student assistants to design and deliver programs for graduate and/or undergraduate students, and University employees to promote leadership development, equity, multicultural education, social equality, and to address the intersectionality of identities such as gender, race, religion, ethnicity, class, and ability. This position will promote the Pride Center and raise awareness of LGBTQIA excellence and student concerns through supporting events/programs, written materials and through representation on campus-wide committees.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base) benefits-eligible, at-will position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in LGBTQIA Studies, Ethnic Students, Cultural Studies, Women's Studies, or a related field
  • Five years of progressively responsible professional experience providing student services
  • Five years of experience promoting diversity and inclusion in higher education or a similarly complex organization
  • Demonstrated experience managing professional staff


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in LGBTQ Studies, Ethnic Students or Cultural Studies, Women' Studies, Higher Education Administration or a related field
  • Bilingual or multilingual
  • Prior experience in higher education
  • Experience working from anti-racist, queer, and feminist frameworks.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply power, privilege, and inequity concepts to create safe working environments for minoritized students, faculty, and staff
  • Experience participating in and leading movement(s) to create meaningful systemic change
  • Track record operating with an anti-oppression framework and an anti-deficit lens
  • Ability to understand and navigate a dynamic campus culture
  • Knowledge and experience working with diverse LGBTQIA populations, including undocumented students and students from varied national origins
  • Competency in cross-cultural communication
  • Possesses leadership qualities such as: proactiveness, vision, being a self-starter, positivity, and creativity
  • Ability to facilitate difficult dialogues, effectively listen to all points of view and build consensus
  • Demonstrated success working on teams and supporting colleagues on collaborative initiatives
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, with advance notice

Compensation and Benefits

San Diego State University will offer a competitive salary based on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate. San Diego State University also offers a rich benefits package that includes:

SDSU COVID-19 Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. An individual is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose of a two-shot vaccine or two weeks after the first dose of a single-shot vaccine.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.

Supplemental Information

Initial review of the required application materials, including cover letters and resumes, will begin on September 16, 2022. To receive full consideration, apply by September 15, 2022. The position will remain open until filled.

The person holding this position is considered a mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

All management and executive employees shall be required to provide a written statement to the appropriate administrator of any and all outside employment. Employees shall also provide a written statement of outside employment if a written request by an administrator is made.

Offers of employment are contingent upon the presentation of documents that demonstrate a person's identity and authorization to work in the United States, which are consistent with the provisions of the Immigration Reform and Control Act.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU.
