Position Summary:

The Special Gifts Officer (SGO) is an integral member of the development team responsible for soliciting gifts between $1,000-$25,000 to support the mission and strategic direction of Southern Oregon University. The SGO will cultivate and manage relationships with new and prospective donors throughout the region and western U.S. The SGO will work cooperatively with foundation board members, affiliates, development staff, and members of the university's leadership team to increase the number of donors in the President's Circle and move through the pipeline mid-level donors who can support the university's inaugural comprehensive campaign. The SGO should be an energetic, organized and enthusiastic professional with a demonstrated track record of outstanding customer service and relationship-building skills. This is a tremendous opportunity for an enthusiastic professional to be part of a growing development program and to make a significant contribution to the university and its future. Reports to Vice President for University Advancement.

Minimum Classification Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Minimum five years of work experience in a professional, related field
     Energetic, creative, resourceful, and demonstrated initiative
  • Excellent communication skills with demonstrated ability to engage individuals in-person and in writing through articulate, compelling, and well-reasoned proposals.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, with the ability to work on deadline and manage multiple
    assignments at once.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and relationship building skills with all constituents along with a
    proven record of working independently and as part of a team, to achieve organizational goals.
  • Interest in and a passion for all aspects of education and a dedication to promoting the
    university's fundraising priorities for the benefit of the campus
  • PC proficiency (MS Office Suite in Windows environment); facility with Word and Excel
    required.
  • Valid driver's license. Local/regional/national travel required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a college environment with alumni and parent constituencies.
  • Previous work experience in fundraising.
  • Work with fundraising database software, Raiser's Edge preferred.

All Listed Duties:

  • Build and manage a portfolio of prospects capable of supporting SOU with gifts of between $1,000-$25,000.
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit donors and prospects with a focus on building a portfolio of donors
    capable of making mid-size annual gifts to the university.
  • Participate in all aspects of the philanthropic gift cycle. Develop appropriate cultivation,
    solicitation, and stewardship strategies.
  • Manage a portfolio of 75-100 individuals, making at least 80 visits per year to potential
    philanthropic partners for the purpose of soliciting President's Circle level gifts, as well as mid-
    level gifts for annual funds.
  • Plan and implement strategies to grow the President's Circle and oversee programmatic
    initiatives to manage and steward this donor group with colleagues in University Advancement.
  • Recruit and engage the Academic Division Directors, faculty, alumni, and staff to assist in
    identifying potential donors and implement engagement strategies that move prospective
    donors through the giving pipeline.
  • Develop and implement communication strategies with leadership annual fund donors, such as calling leadership annual fund donors throughout the year to cultivate, reporting on gift impact, soliciting their continued support at the leadership level of giving, sending acknowledgment letters, and providing responses to telephone, mail, and email inquiries.

  • Serve as an ambassador of SOU to both internal and external constituencies.
  • With the Alumni Relations Program and major gift officers, identify and collaborate to build
    university presence and engagement in geographic regions with high numbers of SOU alumni.
  • Recommend and collaborate on programming involving the university leadership, faculty, board members and volunteers; planning events in some cases and assisting with others.
  • Collaborate with colleagues on stewardship/recognition efforts for donors, helping to promote a culture of philanthropy among internal and external constituents.
  • Effectively utilize the prospect management system (Raiser's Edge) to record prospect/donor
    activity and other relevant data in a timely fashion

  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for
    occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work additional hours and adjust working hours to meet
    special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on
    an emergency basis.
