Assistant Director of New Student Experience and Family Relations*

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Assistant Director of New Student Experience and Family Relations is responsible for the transition of all new Traditional Undergraduate (TUG) students into the Vanguard community and seeks to create systems, programs, and interventions that promote student success for first-year students. This position is also responsible to implement support for families and to engage them with the university experience in multiple and meaningful ways. This position reports to the Dean of Student Development & Success.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

New Student Orientation (NSO):

Vision-cast for New Student Orientation including Online Orientation and Welcome Week
Design and implement fall and spring Welcome Week program for the incoming TUG students each year. Attention is given to addressing transitional needs of special student populations such as commuter students, transfers, international students, etc.
Update and execute Online Orientation for new students and their families
Recruit, select, train, supervise, and provide professional development to six student First-Year Experience Coordinators
Publicize for, recruit, interview, select and supervise 60+ orientation leaders called, 'Frontline Leaders'
Plan and implement training for Frontline Leader staff
Create and analyze assessment for new students, families, and student leaders to measure learning outcomes and programmatic goals
Chair the 9-person Orientation Council comprised of campus administrators who help plan and execute Welcome Week
Attend and participate in approximately 5 summer Academic Registration events

Cornerstone:

Coordinate Cornerstone, the one-unit 8-week orientation class for first-year freshmen (e.g., curriculum selection in conjunction with the Core Curriculum Committee, working with departments to select and hire facilitators, scheduling all 25+ sections of the course, registering students for appropriate class sections)
Use relevant student development theory as the basis of Cornerstone to aid the student transition Ensure that the course is aligned to Student Learning Outcomes.
Recruit, select, train, supervise, and provide professional development to two Cornerstone Lead Peer Mentor(s)

First-Year Leadership Program(Activate):

Oversee Activate, a first-year leadership development and transition program, that acts as a retention tool and serves as a pipeline for getting at-promise students involved in leadership roles on campus
Publicize for, recruit, interview, select and train a cohort of first-year students to participate in the semester-long Activate first-year leadership program
Design Activate leadership curriculum and programming to fulfill targeted learning outcomes outlined in the Four-Year Discipleship Plan

Family Relations:

Oversee Family Relations functions including Family Orientation, Family Day, monthly family webinars, monthly family newsletter, and a family Facebook page
Develop a system for tracking and maintaining meaningful contact with undergraduate students and families
Act as the main liaison between the university and families for disseminating information
In conjunction with the First-Year Experience Coordinator and Translator, oversee and promote Relaciones Familaires, a branch of Family Relations for Spanish-speaking families that offers a monthly newsletter, webpage, phone line, and translation at events

Miscellaneous:

Create initiatives, programs, and services to recognize and serve transfer students (i.e. National Transfer Student Week)
Manage one professional staff or graduate assistant who assists with the above functions
Oversee the New Student Experience and Family Relations budget
Remain current on trends and developments in the areas of new student orientation
Continued personal and professional development
Promote a work atmosphere that values diversity and provides creative programming to meet the diverse learning needs of students related to gender, ethnicity, age, and disability status
Maintain a lifestyle in consonance with sound Christian principles and those promulgated by the institution
Participate in the spiritual growth, development, care and support of other employees and students who work in and with the Office of Student Engagement and in the department of Student Affairs
Attends meetings and events, which may occur during the evening or on the weekends, as necessary in support of this position
Performs other duties as assigned by the Dean of Student Development & Success

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's degree in student Affairs or related field preferred. At least two years experience in higher education administration.
Working knowledge of student development theory and leadership principles; awareness of and interest in the changing issues students face as they enter and attend college. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and other professionals.
Experience in office management skills highly preferred. Ability to adopt and learn new technologies that may enhance programs and services. Demonstrated ability in the following areas: Conflict resolution and problem-solving skills, leadership training and organizing large campus-wide events.

Full-time position. Salary is commensurate with education and experience and includes a generous benefits package.
