About the Opportunity
Summary:
The Department of Residential Life, which curates a living-learning environment for more than 10,000 students, is seeking an Associate Director to lead the department's residential education and community engagement efforts. Under the direction of the Senior Director, the Associate Director is a member of the department leadership team and provides oversight, support, and assistance to professional staff and students. The Associate Director will assist in the development of departmental policy and decision-making functions for the achievement of departmental goals and objectives. They will be charged with coordination and implementation of departmental decisions and directives and will process and resolve student/parent/guardian or staff concerns.
The Associate Director will oversee critical functions within Residential Life, including student conduct, living learning community development and programming, thematic experiential programs, as well as the residential education model which drives our community engagement efforts.
Additionally, this position is responsible for providing leadership and visioning with regard to the development of programming that is germane to all student learners. Responsibilities include the promotion and growth of student learning, academics, retention and community engagement. This position will work to create a comprehensive, engaging, supportive, and successful experience for students at Northeastern. The primary purpose is to develop and maintain an environment conducive to social and intellectual growth as well as the academic success of resident students. The intended result will be numerous opportunities for students to extract meaning from any experience.
This position will also manage the Faculty in Residence program which is made up of four faculty members that live-in the residence halls. To maximize the potential of this program, the Associate Director is charged with promoting faculty involvement within the residential community as well as, produce high quality programs for residents and Honors students.
This position will work with global mobility program staff in addition to colleagues throughout Student Affairs to coordinate programming and community engagement initiatives to assist with their transition to the Boston campus.
This position will actively engage with the Northeastern students residing in university housing by attending engagements/programs, staff trainings, events, or meetings. Given that Northeastern University is a Co-Op institution, with students working full-time jobs for a semester or more, the Associate Director will provide evening and weekend support as needed or required.
The Associate Director will participate and facilitate regular dialogue and development efforts related to the needs of a diverse student and staff population. Additionally, they will support and contribute to the University's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
This staff member will participate in an on-call duty rotation with other Administrators on-call. Given this role is a live-off position with an on-call responsibility, this staff member should live no more than 60 miles from Northeastern's Boston campus and remain within a 60-mile radius from campus when actively serving as the Administrator on-Call (ADOC). University housing is open 365 days per year and there are always multiple levels of staff on-call to support each day/night, therefore some nights, weekends, and holiday support is required for this role. Holidays during the academic year may require in-person office coverage for part of the day.
Northeastern University Housing & Residential Life Department experiences peak busy times where additional support may be needed outside of traditional business hours, including opening, closing, and transition periods. This role is expected to support in 'all hands are on deck' for major sporting events, campus emergencies, campus and department events, and peak times of year when additional staffing is needed to support the on-call team.
Qualifications:
Master's degree in student personnel, higher education administration, or related field preferred.
At least 6 years of professional work experience. Three years preferred in residence hall administration, including experience as a live-in staff member.
Experience supervising midlevel Residential life professionals preferred.
Comprehensive understanding of student development research and theories preferred.
Experience work with Student Conduct, community engagement and Residential Curriculums preferred.
Demonstrates organizational and leadership abilities.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Experience with computer applications and social media platforms as a tool for community engagement and student and staff development.
Ability to work autonomously and ability to exercise excellent judgment and initiative in outlined areas of responsibility
Experience with an educational outcomes approach to learning and a demonstrated ability to apply educational outcomes throughout areas of responsibility is preferred.
Experience and desire to work with and address the needs of a diverse student community of leader- learners.
