POSITION TITLE

Associate Provost, Academic Affairs

INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH

The New School was founded by forward-thinking educators in 1919 to defy the intellectual constraints of a traditional college education. We are seeking an experienced, highly motivated, socially engaged university administrator to serve as Assistant/Associate Provost, Academic Affairs.

The Associate Provost for Academic Affairs is responsible for leading and managing key areas related to the implementation of academic degree programs and university curricular initiatives and serves as the Provostâ™s Officeâ™s primary liaison to the college deansâ™ offices for issues related to Academic Affairs. The position requires both anticipating and responding to internal or external issues that may impact programs, especially with regard to their university-wide implementation. A successful candidate will demonstrate at a high level: the ability to design and lead collaborative recommendation and decision-making processes, the ability for complex problem solving, and a commitment to information sharing and transparency in communication. The position reports to the Vice Provost for Curriculum and Learning and works closely with other members of the Provostâ™s Office Senior Staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manages and implements institution-wide academic affairs work including academic policy, academic integrity, academic standing and academic scheduling; leads initiatives to evaluate and better align academic affairs areas with university mission and vision. 

  • Serves as primary liaison to six college units on all academic-affairs and academic-related work; manages and evaluates and improves implementation of academic affairs-related matters across the university. 

  • Ensures consistent implementation of university and academic priorities, processes, policies, and procedures; creates structure to continually evaluate the effectiveness of academic policy and academic affairs work; chairs the Academic Affairs and and Academic Policy Committees.

  • Provides oversight and ensures the successful delivery of university-wide curriculum and curricular projects such as University Lecture Courses, University Transdisciplinary Courses, undergraduate and graduate minors, and Shared Capacities (general education), and English Language Studies programs/courses; oversees the budget for university curriculum and curricular initiatives.

  • Leads and manages key university initiatives including the Graduate Student Teaching Program (Teaching Assistants and Teaching Fellows) and Academic Orientation;

  • Collaborates closely with colleagues in Faculty Affairs, Academic Planning and Administration, Institutional Research and Decision Support, Strategic Enrollment Management, Student Success & Advising, and Continuing and Professional Education on issues related to academic affairs and university curriculum. 

  • Supervises the following positions: Program Director, University Curriculum, Senior Director of English Language Studies, Senior Director for Academic Standards, Director of Academic Scheduling, and Assistant Director of Academic Affairs.

  • Leads other academic-related initiatives as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Masterâ™s degree required

  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive responsibility and leadership in higher education or related field.

  • Demonstrated successful experience with the implementation of academic degree programs and related areas of work within a complex academic institution.

  • Outstanding written and verbal communications skills with the ability to effectively convey complex data to a wide array of audiences.

  • A commitment to equity, inclusion and social justice, and evidence of engagement in this space.

  • Experienced user of academic systems, analytical tools and databases.

  • Demonstrated leadership ability with a proven record of success in working with all levels of leadership and staff in a rapidly changing and complex organization.

  • Excellent judgment, ability to collaborate, and creative problem-solving abilities.

  • Strong interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to adhere to University COVID-19 Policy 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Terminal degree in a related field

WORK MODE

  • Hybrid/Split - Employees hired for this position have regularly scheduled, consistent percentage of time on campus (ex 1-4x/week) and also work some of the time remotely. 

SALARY RANGE

  • $130,000 - $140,000
