Department Information

The Division of Student Affairs is focused on building a strong foundation to ensure every student's IU experience is positive, safe, healthy, and meaningful. The Division of Student Affairs staff and 22 departments aim to help students navigate their time at IU, providing the tools they need to be successful in school and after graduation. Students are our priority, and their health, safety, and overall well-being are our core mission.

Within the Division, the Student Involvement and Leadership Center fosters growth and learning among all students by designing and supporting inclusive experiences and engaging opportunities that connect those we serve with the campus, the community, each other, and themselves. Housed within the Indiana Memorial Union, the Center is home to a number of programs that engage the student body including student organization support, advising of key University Student Organizations, leadership programs, community engagement, Outdoor Adventures, Late Nite programs, and Bowling & Billiards.

The Indiana Memorial Union (IMU) has been the heart of the Indiana University Bloomington campus for more than 100 years. Every day thousands of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and guests enjoy the many amenities and opportunities the IMU has to offer.

Job Summary

This position has the primary responsibility for oversight and support of IU Bloomington student organizations.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Provides an extensive span of professional work in advising and programming for students and student groups.
  • Designs and administers student life initiatives to increase student engagement and involvement, foster development, build community, and improve the student campus experience.
  • Provides guidance to student organizations and student leaders regarding operations, budget, leadership, activities, recruitment, registration, policies, and compliance.
  • Promotes leadership and student development through advising of individual student leaders and volunteers.
  • Contributes to formation, interpretation, and implementation of student organization policies.

General Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements programs and initiatives geared at improving student engagement and involvement outcomes at the program, department/division, or campus level.
  • Interfaces directly with students, attending student life events and programs and gathering satisfaction feedback from student participants to implement into future student life initiatives and objectives.
  • Collaborates with staff in own department and other departments, as well as student organization leaders, on shared student life goals, often coordinating funding to sponsor student life initiatives.
  • Measures and evaluates effectiveness of student life initiatives against projected outcomes; regularly prepares reports and presents to stakeholders on effectiveness and to secure funding for initiatives moving forward.
  • Provides guidance to student organizations regarding operations, budget, leadership, activities, recruitment, registration, policies, and compliance. Promotes leadership and student development through advising of individual student leaders and volunteers. Contributes to formation, interpretation, and implementation of student organization policies.
  • Plans and coordinates communications for student life initiatives to ensure student participation and inclusion.
  • May provide guidance to other Student Life Specialists; makes process recommendations to manager for improved delivery of service.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in public affairs, public health, counseling, social work, education, business, or related field

Preferred

  • Master's degree in higher education student affairs or related field

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 2 years in student services, higher education, or related field

Preferred

  • Knowledge of the foundational principles of the Student Affairs profession, including knowledge of student development theory and the ability to apply theory to practice.
  • Knowledge of current trends in student engagement, the legal landscape related to student organizations, current issues related to IU campus policy and procedure, and general finance.
  • Ability to relate well with a diverse population of college students ranging from first-year students to graduate and non-traditional-aged students, including international students, and to create environments that promote and embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Ability to establish strategic goals, develop program curricula, create and assess learning outcomes, evaluate programs, and track data.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Work Hours

The position requires some evening and weekend work, and may involve travel.
