Position Summary

The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and Campus Diversity is responsible for the coordination and development of student services and building the inclusive excellence of SDSU's staff and faculty at San Diego State University. Departments include, but not limited to, Assistant Deans for Student Affairs; Career Services; Center for Educational Partnerships, Outreach and Success; Communications Services; Counseling & Psychological Services; Cultural and Identity Centers; Educational Opportunity Programs and Ethnic Affairs; Financial Aid and Scholarships; Military Veterans Program; New Student and Parent Programs; Office of the Student Ombudsman; Residential Education; Resource Management; Student Ability Success Center; Student Health Services; Student Life and Leadership; Student Rights and Responsibilities; Testing Services Office; Well-being & Health Promotion; and programming related to Inclusive Excellence.

Division of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity

The Division facilitates the academic and career success, personal growth and well-being of all students, and works proactively to address systemic inequities through professional learning, community building, advocacy, policy recommendations and organizational structures. We aim to foster an affirming campus culture based on the core values of excellence, equity, diversity, belonging and inclusion through:

  • Recruiting and retaining faculty and staff who are reflective of the diverse student body and communities served by SDSU, and recruiting students who are representative of the rich diversity of the region and the world;

  • Fostering an environment that is welcoming, affirming, and empowering for students, faculty, staff and alumni of all backgrounds;

  • Enhancing the career and educational pathways of a diverse student body, the faculty and staff, including enhancing the learning environment and expanding learning opportunities for all students inside and outside the classroom, and expanding and connecting opportunities for students to participate in transformational experiences;

Student Ability Success Center (SASC) in the Division of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity provides a full range of accommodations and services to nearly 2,500 students with physical, psychological, and learning disabilities, facilitating equal access to the educational process. This is accomplished through direct service support, review of campus accessibility, adaptive technology, assessment, test accommodation, and a variety of other services. Accommodations vary according to types of disabilities, and may include sign language interpreting; provision of alternative formats, such as electronic text or Braille; computer-assisted real-time captioning; test accommodations; advising; assistive computer technology; cart transportation services, and numerous other services. Provision of these academic support services, technology and advocacy promotes the retention and graduation of students with disabilities at SDSU.

Two additional programs are affiliated with the Student Ability Success Center. The first is funded by a federal TRiO-Student Support Services grant that provides enhanced services intended to increase graduation and retention rates of at-risk undergraduates. The TRiO-SSS program employs three professional staff. The second is a Workability IV program that is a cooperative contract between the state Department of Rehabilitation (DOR), SDSU Career Services and Student Ability Success Center the purpose of which is to deliver enhanced career services to students with disabilities who are DOR consumers. The Workability IV program employs one full-time professional staff and one part-time support staff.

Under the supervision of the Associate Director and lead work direction from the Operations & Budget Coordinator, the Administrative Support Assistant II performs a wide variety of general administrative duties to support the activities of the Student Ability Success Center department. This position is the initial contact for students, prospective students, staff, faculty, and community members and regularly needs to use best judgment and discretion to address a variety of situations while assisting visitors. The Administrative Support Assistant II is responsible for day to day operation of the front desk, collaborating in work activities with student assistant(s), and providing administrative support for departmental operations, and supporting the public relations efforts of the department (via YouTube, web-based social networking, newsletters, mailings, etc.).

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position anticipated to end on or before June 30, 2023, with the possibility of reappointment. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Education and Experience

Entry to this classification requires fundamental written and oral communication skills, including a sound foundation in English grammar, spelling, and punctuation; an ability to understand standard office procedures; an ability to operate standard office equipment; an ability to learn office technology systems; an ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations; and typing and keyboard skills.

These entry qualifications would normally be obtained through completion of a high school program or its equivalent and some experience in an office environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of progressively responsible clerical or administrative experience

  • Experience greeting and verbally communicating instructions and information to customers in person and/or over the phone

  • Experience working with or interacting with individuals with disabilities

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite applications

  • Experience with flier or newsletter layout and design

  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $3,338 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,338 - $4,913 per month.

SDSU Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. An individual is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose of a two-shot vaccine or two weeks after the first dose of a single-shot vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.
