Job Title: Counselor (AY), Student Counseling Center

Department: Student Health & Wellness

Division: Student Affairs

FLSA Status: Exempt

Reports to: Director, Student Counseling Center

Grade: 8

Salary Range: $75,000 - $80,000

Position summary: The Counselor is an integral team member in the Student Counseling Center (SCC).  As a SCC team, the counselor will provide therapeutic, developmental, and crisis intervention through individual counseling, psychoeducation groups, outreach and counseling services for students with acute psychological problems. In addition, the counselor provides consultations and coordinates the management of referrals to internal/external providers and community resources.  The SCC is under the leadership of the Director of SCC and has collaborative relationships with members of the Student Health and Wellness team (i.e., Student Development, Health Services, Accessibility and Disability Services) that is essential to the role of this position. 

The position is a 10 month (academic year) exempt position.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a clinician providing therapy, interventions, referral services, and outreach to undergraduate and graduate students.

  • Provide crisis intervention and risk assessment in student emergencies, facilitating crisis response and/or hospitalization protocols.

  • Assist with MICA’s on-call rotation in supporting the protocol for on-call counselor crisis response as needed.

  • Complete necessary and required clinical and administrative paperwork in a timely manner and consistent with office expectations and professional standards.

  • Maintain cooperative and collaborative relationships with students, faculty and staff within MICA and partners in the local community.

  • Consults with faculty and staff on issues relevant to student mental health concerns, behavior, and educational performance, particularly members of the wellness team and residence life.

  • Serve as a member of the Student Affairs team, working with Student Affairs committees to plan or participate in orientation, parents' weekend, leadership retreats, and other programs and events.

  • As assigned, develop, coordinate, and implement student programming and outreach on a broad range of psychological and mental health issues.

  • As assigned, generate reports using Titanium Schedule to assist in the coordination of clinical care to students.

  • As assigned, assist center leadership in decision making around appropriate level of care for students.

  • As assigned, participate in the development of counseling policies, forms, and procedures.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Masters or doctoral degree in social work, counseling, clinical or counseling psychology.

  • Licensed in Maryland as an LCSW-C, LCPC or Licensed Psychologist.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated strong clinical skills and experience with college students

  • Expertise with serious mental health disorders as well as with issues of typical development

  • Relevant personal counseling experience in a college/university setting or equivalent

  • Sensitivity to and interest in the unique concerns of students involved in artistic pursuits in a highly specialized and demanding educational environment.

  • Demonstrated awareness and experience with LGBTQ, DEI, and international student concerns.

  • Experience in referrals coordination.

  • Knowledge of and/or experience with a wide variety of mental health services such as in-patient care and the private practice community.

  • Knowledge of and/or experience with public and private health insurances.

  • Knowledge of current short-term therapy and crisis intervention techniques adapted to a college setting.

  • Familiarity with Titanium Schedule or similar electronic health record.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Work environment: While performing the duties of the job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

  • Required training: Handbook orientation, Anti-Harassment, Hazard Communication, Emergency Plans & Fire Prevention, Personal Protection Equipment. (additional training may be added, SEE: EHS Manager training schedule)
