SUMMARY

The Dean of Business & Industry is a new position at GRCC that was created after a reorganization of Academic and Student Affairs. The Dean position presents an opportunity for an innovative, collaborative, and student focused leader to help shape the future of student success, academic excellence, and community impact at GRCC.

The Dean of Business & Industry is responsible for the leadership of the College's credit programs in Business & Industry (Business, the Secchia Institute for Culinary Education, Manufacturing, Applied Technology, Automotive Technology, Criminal Justice), including creating and implementing a vision aligned with the mission, vision, values, and strategic direction of GRCC. The Dean will create and sustain a working environment within the School that demonstrates a spirit of collaboration, innovation, access, and inclusion. The successful candidate will be a strategic leader with a deep understanding of and experience with education in the School and the vital role it plays in the academic, personal, and civic development of a student. The Dean will work in cooperation with College and School leadership to create and sustain programs relevant to students and the community. To successfully achieve these results the Dean will need to cultivate effective and mutually beneficial partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.

The Dean reports to the Provost/Executive Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, and serves as an active member of multiple leadership teams on campus.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Provide administrative leadership, support, and supervision for the School.
  • Identify innovative approaches to programs and processes to advance the vision and direction of the School.
  • Identify and advance the development of equity-centered best practices in teaching and learning within the School.
  • Collect, review, and analyze data relevant to program vitality, student success, and other trends.
  • Promote, support, and ensure compliance with programmatic accreditation requirements.
  • Convene the membership of the School on a regular basis.
  • Review and refine the vision and strategic direction for the School.
  • Oversee the infusion of cultural competencies in the curriculum in collaboration with other leaders in the College.
  • Support Department Heads and Program Directors in maintaining current programs with a focus on continuous improvement, including overseeing the formal program review and evaluation process for the School.
  • Oversee curriculum within the School and support the Associate Deans, Department Heads, and Program Directors work with curriculum development and revision.
  • Support Department Heads and Program Directors in the exploration and development of new programs.
  • Advocate for the faculty, staff, and programs in the School.
  • Advocate for academic pathways, including transfer partnerships and employment placement.
  • Promote grant opportunities for the School with focus on Perkins funding.
  • Ensure alignment of departmental plans to the Provost's vision, the strategic plan, and mission of the College.
  • Support, supervise, and evaluate direct reports in the School, including an Associate Dean and a Support Professional. Convene regular meetings, establish work expectations, and complete annual performance evaluations.
  • Aligned with expectations established by the Provost, set standards for hiring new faculty and staff and regularly review the hiring processes to maximize transparency, inclusion, efficiency and effectiveness in collaboration with the Associate Dean, Human Resources and Department Heads.
  • Review and recommend FT faculty and staff hires, tenure, and promotion to the Provost, in conjunction with Associate Deans and Department Heads.
  • Encourage interdisciplinary connections within the School and across Schools to enhance the student experience through innovative curriculum, learning experiences, and career exploration.
  • Facilitate collaboration between credit and non-credit programs.
  • Allocate resources and other systemic supports to promote professional development for faculty and staff.
  • Participate in College-wide planning as appropriate, including but not limited to planning related to the strategic plan, budget development, emergency response, and facility master planning.
  • Provide local leadership to develop and promote K-12 and transfer initiatives with education partners.
  • Actively participate in and retain membership in statewide and national organizations and activities that foster the maintenance and improvement of programs.
  • Monitor legislative activity at the State and Federal level and provide input to the legislative process as appropriate.
  • Participates in collective bargaining teams, as needed and assigned by the President.
  • This role is a Campus Security Authority (CSA). CSAs will be trained and responsible for reporting Clery Reportable Crimes to Campus Police as required by the Clery Act.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Provost.


JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education
  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in an academic discipline offered in the School of Business & Industry or a closely related field is required.


Work Experience
  • Prior experience in a role responsible for oversight of educational programming or experience working in an industry represented in the School is required.
  • Supervisory experience of instructional staff is preferred.
  • Experience leading programs in the School in a higher education setting is preferred.
  • Teaching experience in higher education is preferred.
  • Experience working with grants, especially Perkins, is preferred.
  • Experience in a community college is preferred.
  • Experience working in a collective bargaining environment is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with developing and moving forward initiatives that advance equity, access, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated successful leadership of complex, collaborative initiatives.
  • Demonstrated successful advocacy for students and students' needs.

Physical Demands
  • The position requires long periods of sitting, standing, reading, and writing, listening and speaking.


Working Conditions
  • Grand Rapids Community College will comply with any mandated health and safety requirements. Employees will be directed to our GRCC Policy(s) for compliance information.
  • Must be able to attend functions off campus and work weekends/evenings as required.
  • Professional travel required.
