Job Purposes::

Under the general direction of the Associate Director, the Disability Specialist with a focus on Deaf & HOH service coordination is responsible for the management and provision of programs, services, and accommodations for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (HOH) students with disabilities. This position will coordinate and administer the Deaf & HOH services for Deaf and HOH students within the Office of Disability Services. Additionally, this position will directly coordinate student accommodations and work directly with students to discuss their disability/ies, needed supports and self-advocacy.

Required Qualifications::

  • Master's degree in Human Services, Rehabilitation Counseling, Interpreting Studies, American Sign Language, Deaf Studies, Education, Special Education, or a related field
  • Three years of related experience with at least one year of professional experience working with the Deaf/Hard of Hearing
  • Experience/training on a college campus providing general advising, student success counseling, career, academic and/or other support to transitioning college-bound high school students and/or continuing college students
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Competence in Microsoft Office applications including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel

Preferred Qualifications::

  • Five years of experience working with the Deaf in Higher Education
  • Experience working with persons with various disabilities.
  • Clear knowledge and understanding of the application of Section 504 and the ADA especially in the higher education context
  • Ability to recognize legal risk associated with certain disability issues
  • Demonstrated knowledge of all categories of disabilities and appropriate accommodations in an academic environment
  • Ability to interpret psycho-educational assessments
  • Ability to use advanced techniques in spreadsheet, database, and/or presentation software
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments concurrently and re-prioritize; ability to successfully adapt to rapid change; ability to work collaboratively and to foster effective relationships
  • Ability to communicate and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds
  • Strong written and oral communication skills

Essential Functions and percent of time::

50% Disability Accommodations Support:
  • Determines program eligibility and accommodations through an interactive process with students.
  • Provides extensive direct support to students with disabilities.
  • Assists in the testing accommodation processes for the University.
  • Appropriately supports students with disabilities by referring students to campus resources and support services.
  • Participates in outreach to new students and families regarding the processes and procedures of the Office of Disability Services.
  • Participates on divisional and college-wide committees as requested by Associate Director
  • Assists Director and Associate Director in outreach goals for the Office.
  • Responsible for supporting and implementing any reporting obligations in coordination with the General Counsel's Office.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned, including broad collaboration with campus partners and being on-call for one week twice a semester.
