To develop, implement, and maintain Goucher College's environmental stewardship & sustainability program. The program will expand existing and support aspirational strategic goals. This position will reduce the College's existing carbon footprint, identify new funding sources and grant opportunities, while managing planned sustainability projects that have outcomes consistent with internal, market based, and regional stakeholder objectives. This position is responsible for leading the administration, research, development, outreach, planning, and execution of the College's environmental sustainability and climate action plan initiatives. 



Job Requirements:

Education:

Required:  Bachelors degree in Environmental Management, Environmental Stewardship, Environmental Sustainability, Business Administration, or related field.

 

Preferred:  Masters degree in Environmental Management, Environmental Stewardship, Environmental Sustainability, Business Administration, or related field; or relevant industry certification.  

 

Professional Experience:

Required:  5 years of leadership experience in a sustainability-related position.

Preferred: 7+ years of progressively increasing responsibilities and experience working in a results driven leadership position responsible for measureable outcomes (e.g., budget reduction, lowered carbon footprint, reduced utility consumption, grant awards). Past experience within higher education.    

 

Computer Skills:  

Experience with Microsoft Office including Word, Excel (preferably including use of formulas, creating charts, and sorting data), and PowerPoint.

 

Other Skills, Abilities, Qualifications: 

Excellent oral and written communication skills. Experience with data gathering and report writing. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to prioritize - including ability to work under time pressure and manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Strategic, analytical, systems-thinker, and goal-oriented. Ability to motivate, influence, communicate with, and indirectly manage others. Creative, resilient, and flexible. Diplomacy and discretion in handling sensitive and confidential information.  Basic understanding of arithmetic and ability to compute. 



Additional Information:

Salary Range: $77,438 - $91,104

Provide leadership and daily management for specific sustainability projects/initiatives in collaboration with the Vice President of Campus Operations and appropriate College offices. Projects/initiatives may include, but are not limited to:

  • Renewable Energy & Energy Conservation: Lead the College's efforts to identify and pursue energy saving projects/retrofits.
  • Recycling, Composting, and Other Waste Management Efforts: Lead the College's efforts to identify and pursue improvement strategies.
  • Eco-system Initiatives: Lead the College's efforts to identify and pursue more environmentally sustainable practices for managing campus grounds.

 

Collect data and establish baseline measurements for existing utility consumption. Responsible for using data to identify and prioritize operational changes resulting in measurable utility consumption reduction; and developing five, 10, and 15 year utility consumption reduction plans. Implementation of plans must include regular (i.e., monthly, quarterly, annually) reporting on milestones achieved towards the recommended reduction goal. 

  • Renewable Energy & Energy Conservation: Collect and report on relevant sustainability and energy consumption data, providing updates to the campus community.
  • Recycling, Composting, & Other Waste Management Efforts: Collaborate with Facilities Management Services (FMS) staff, student leaders, and other appropriate community members to examine current recycling, composting, and waste efforts and implement improvement strategies. Work with campus dining services provider to assess current efforts and identify ways to further increase food waste reduction or diversion initiatives on campus.
  • Eco-system Initiatives: In collaboration with FMS Grounds Manager, investigate and support more environmentally sustainable practices for managing campus grounds (e.g., low/no mow areas, pollinator-friendly/native plantings, integrated pest management, low/no herbicide/pesticide use, forestry management plans, foraging, master naturalist program).
  • Collect and categorize information by reference point such as building type, academic program, seasonal usage, etc. Reference points should be able to support the College's ability to identify and adjust excessive usage patterns as part of the utility consumption reduction plans.
  • Complete annual reports including, but not limited to greenhouse gas inventory, STARS report, and climate commitment progress reports.
  • Recommend renovations, capital projects, and sustainability partnerships to assist the College with achieving sustainability initiatives.    

 

Research, identify, pursue, and secure new external funding sources (e.g., local, state, and corporate incentives/rebates) to support sustainability efforts. Investigate additional energy savings and renewable energy projects (e.g., LEED lighting retrofits, heating/cooling setbacks, solar/wind renewable energy credits (RECs), solar power purchase agreements (PPAs).

 

Collaborate with Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, and Marketing & Communications to develop intentional methods to educate the Goucher community about on-campus sustainability practices, including but not limited to changes to daily actions (e.g., elevator usage, group transportation methods, use of natural light, HVAC temperatures and system settings).  

 

Serve as the chairperson for the  Goucher Sustainability Committee. Build the organizational/decision-making structure, facilitate meetings, and coordinate educational programs and group discussions. Follow-up with stakeholders between meetings. Provide the Vice President for Campus Operations with regular updates.

 

Transportation initiatives: Encourage and support the use of less carbon-intensive modes of travel (e.g., biking, public transit, EV cars, carpooling). Manage and effectively promote ride share agreements and transportation partnerships to ensure the campus community is aware of available sustainable transportation options.

 

Build cross-functional partnerships, structures, and processes to further advise, influence, and integrate sustainability at the divisional and departmental level throughout the organization.

 

Remain knowledgeable on sustainable practices in higher education and grow Goucher's presence in the industry by attending and speaking at workshops, conferences, and programs both on- and off-campus.
