Detailed Job Description
The Health Promotion Specialist will develop, deliver, and assess general health education and promotion programs for RIT students. This position reports to the Health Promotion Coordinator. The Health Promotion Specialist will serve as a resource to the campus community on issues related to health education and will help develop policies and procedures that are consistent with harm reduction strategies. The Health Promotion Specialist will establish strong, collaborative relationships with community partners and represent RIT on local groups and task forces associated with general health education and illness prevention. Responsibilities:

• Provides oversight and planning for the Wellness Peer Educator program including the process to hire, recruit, train (fall and spring), manage, supervise and evaluate student staff. Assist with record keeping measures for Wellness Peer Educator Program.
• With guidance from the Health Promotion Coordinator, develop, implement and maintain a comprehensive, collaborative and integrative health promotion, education and prevention programs for students. Oversees cross divisional wellness efforts to insure collaboration in the planning and implementation of health promotion activities, including the assessment of all health promotion, education and prevention programs and services to determine their relevance and effectiveness.
• Assists in the assessment of attitudes, behaviors, perceptions and outcomes of prevention efforts among the college population, primarily through the NCHA survey and mandatory online training programs for new and returning students. Uses this research to educate the campus and develop programming, social norming/marketing initiatives, and awareness campaigns. Maintain current topic materials for teaching and dissemination as appropriate.
• Serves as a resource to students, staff, and faculty on issues related to general health promotion. Provides consultation and advisement for those members of the campus community who seek specific information and/or programming related to general health promotion topics. Presents to clubs, groups, classes, and organizations as requested. Serves on conduct boards and in hearings as appropriate.
• Assists with New Student Orientation programming.
• Develops relationships with community partners as well as local, community resources. Serves as the representative for local groups and task forces related to prevention. Seeks external funding for support of wellness program initiatives as appropriate.
• Participates in professional development and committee activities as assigned.
• Other duties as assigned.

Department/College Description


Minimum Qualifications
Education:

• Bachelors degree in Public Health, Health Promotion, Health Education, Community Mental Health, Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, or a closely related field and/or equivalent experience.

Experience:

• Minimum of two to four years experience in health education/health promotion and programming.

Specialized Skills:

• Proven experience creating and assessing programs that support student well-being.
• Significant knowledge of mental health, sleep hygiene, and stress management content, prevention strategies, and the implications related to these topics within the college student population.
• Ability to think critically and solve problems, as well as handle multiple projects simultaneously.
• Experience supervising students, teams and/or multidisciplinary groups of people.
• Demonstrated cultural competence and inclusiveness in working with populations of diverse cultures and identities in addressing issues of diversity, health and social justice.
• Ability to manage and maintain confidential and private information; uses confidential, sensitive and/or private records and information, protects information appropriately.
• Computer competence using software and enterprise systems appropriate for the complexities of the role and its functions.
• Effective interpersonal, written, and electronic communications skills, including the ability to convey complex information in accessible terms to diverse or multicultural audiences.
