Position Summary

Columbia Business School has been pioneering business practices and educating leaders from around the world for over a century. This role will provide a unique opportunity for a highly talented, team-first professional with a passion for working with employers and students to become part of a world-class, Ivy League institution as a member of the high-energy, mission-driven Career Management Center (CMC) department.

 

As a member of the CMC leadership team, the Executive Director, Employer Relations, leads employer engagement efforts of the School for ~2,500 current students (MBA, Executive MBA, MS) and 49,000+ global alumni. The Executive Director is responsible for identifying, building, and enhancing relationships with U.S. domestic and global organizations that have the potential to hire Columbia Business School talent.

 

This position oversees the selection, hiring, training, management, and evaluation of the 6-person Employer Relations team, including industry-aligned relationship managers (2 Sr. Associate Directors, 3 Assistant Directors) and a recruiting operations manager. In addition, the Executive Director actively collaborates with the Executive Directors of 1) Career Education & Advising (CEA), 2) International & MS, and 3) Experienced Professionals Career Management (XPCM) to ensure career education strategy and programming are aligned with the interests of employers and to determine mutual staff support for student and recruiter populations to improve hiring outcomes.


Responsibilities

  1. Determines employer engagement plan and recruiting strategy, timelines, and policies, in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders including, and not limited to, public, private and nonprofit hiring organizations, Dean???s Office, CMC Associate Dean and Executive Directors, Faculty, Centers & Programs, Development and Alumni Relations, Office of Student Affairs, Admissions, Marketing and Communications, Operations, and student leadership. Benchmarks with peer schools. Oversees implementation of annual recruiting cycle and ongoing communications.
  2. Oversees efforts to develop, maintain, and further relationships with employers in sectors of interest to the students and alumni, and in alignment with the School???s vision for the future of business. Strategically targets employers new to CBS as they build their talent pipelines via job postings, campus/club events, student trips, and other activities. Actively maintains recruiting partnerships by providing high-level consultation to employers seeking to maximize recruiting efforts. Synthesizes and shares employer feedback with career advisors, students, faculty, and other internal stakeholders.
  3. Manages the on-campus recruiting process, inclusive of 200+ company events (e.g., corporate presentations, networking receptions, small group information sessions, etc.), 2500+ CMC-facilitated interviews, the School???s annual Fall and Spring Career Fairs, and an annual Recruiters??? Day. Provides counsel for all student-facing events that include a hiring organization, including events that begin up to three months prior to MBA student matriculation.   Allocates annual operational budget.
  4. Oversees ongoing collection and analysis of student employment data, in accordance with standards set forth by the MBA Career Services & Employer Alliance (MBA CSEA), which is used for the School???s annual Employment Report and provided to the myriad of MBA rankings. Conducts annual qualitative research (e.g., industry-based focus groups with students, employer surveys) to collect actionable feedback on recruiting cycle and hiring outcomes. Along with Associate Dean, CMC, regularly provides employment statistics and hiring market forecasts to Dean???s Office, Faculty and Columbia Business School Board. Presents employment trends to academic departments to inform curriculum development.
  5. Partners with Sr. Associate Director, Communications & Operations, and colleagues in Information Technology Group (ITG) for evaluation, launch and ongoing usage of recruiting platforms, job search tools, CRM software, and other platforms. Participates in meetings with software vendors as needed and appropriate. Evaluates new technology options and best practices for the CMC to develop and deepen recruiter relationships.
  6. Works with Associate Dean, CMC, and the School???s Marketing and Communications team to develop content for website, social media, and other external facing channels. Responsible for production of the School???s annual Employment Report, bi-monthly Employer Newsletters, Recruiters??? Guide, and employer-facing website.
  7. Assigns liaison responsibility and associated duties to MBA advisors and Employer Relations staff for approximately 60 professional, affinity, and social student clubs, in concert with Executive Director, CEA. Partners with Office of Student Affairs in student club engagement strategy, communication, and enforcement of School policy, and on-going training of club leaders. Provides as-needed support, including classroom presentation and/or participation.
  8. Represents office at select professional and peer school meetings, recruiter meetings, media/press interactions, etc. Acts in place of Associate Dean, CMC, as needed and appropriate. Serves as member of CMC leadership team.
  9. Other responsibilities as assigned or necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor???s degree required. 7-9  years of experience required, preferably with management and business experience.

Must have a demonstrated deep commitment to customer service and the ability to multitask, meet deadlines, and excel in a fast-paced, high-volume environment. Ability to balance independent delivery of work with collaborative orientation. Outstanding interpersonal/relationship management and superior writing, verbal, interactive facilitation, and presentation skills for a variety of constituents, including corporate employers, students, faculty, staff, and alumni.  Superior business and political acumen, demonstrated leadership, organizational, and project management skills, and demonstrated initiative to influence and drive change. Proven track record in prioritizing competing priorities and collaboration skills, including the ability to integrate and act upon diverse perspectives. In-depth understanding of MBA jobs in at least one MBA target industry; an understanding of, and appreciation for, needs and concerns of a diverse MBA student body. Significant knowledge of, and experience using, technology and tools, including MS Excel and PowerPoint; familiarity with CRM tools a plus.  Advanced data analytics capability. Ability to work flexible, long hours (early mornings/late evenings anticipated seasonally) and represent Career Management Center, on behalf of Associate Dean. Ability to travel as needed.


Preferred Qualifications

Candidates strongly preferred to have MBA or other Master???s degree and 7+ years industry experience in technology, financial services, and/or consulting sectors, as well as a strong understanding of MBA recruiting processes and nuances. Demonstrated advising experience in either a corporate or academic setting a plus.
