JOB SUMMARY

Using skills as a seasoned, experienced student services professional, the Assistant Director of Student Achievement is responsible for collaborating with the Director to achieve divisional and campus-wide student success goals, such as recruitment, outreach, and retention of students in accordance with divisional and campus-wide student success goals. https://success.ucsc.edu/ The incumbent is responsible for the delivery of programming in support of freshman and transfer students, student outreach, divisional undergraduate advising, and the assessment of programs and initiatives designed to support the diverse undergraduate student community. The incumbent will also develop and implement programs to facilitate outreach to students about the Humanities and its various undergraduate majors, minors, and certificates. Programming will be grounded in student development theory, informed by emerging research and best practices; informed by student retention and graduation rates, and designed to meet the changing needs of diverse student populations. The incumbent must collaborate and maintain effective working relationships across a broad spectrum of faculty and staff, interacting regularly with the Dean, Assistant Dean, Director of Student Achievement, Director of Academic Programs and Planning, Department Chairs and Managers, as well as with core campus units including but not limited to the Division of Student Success and Undergraduate Education, including the Colleges.

Salary Information: Salary Range: $70,000 - $85,000 / Annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES

25% - Student Achievement
  • In consultation with divisional undergraduate advisors and College advising offices, delivers division-specific programming connected to university, division, and campus advising goals, objectives and learning outcomes for undergraduate students relative to academic advising and student success, including student development and academic enrichment.
  • Collaborate with and incorporate campus student support services into programming and initiatives, goals, objectives and outcomes assessment to ensure student retention and success.
  • Develop relationships with faculty from across the division to provide all students with a realistic connection between academic curriculum, research, graduate study, and career options.
  • Work collaboratively with individual department advisors / advising offices in the division to ensure ease of transition from first year residential to program-specific academic advising.
  • Collaborate with the divisional student success team and communications officer to plan and execute communication strategy for programming.

45% - Humanities Outreach
  • Facilitate programs and services in student outreach and recruitment specific to UCSC Humanities.
  • With the Director, marketing coordinator and Admissions, assist in the development of promotional and informational literature. Review and evaluate reports, proposals, publications, and directives that deal with student issues.
  • Perform outreach of transfer students and first year students. Create relationships with local community colleges.
  • Work with advisors to support enhanced transfer articulation and bridge programming, support for courses and community colleges and assists in planning their schedules to complete lower division major requirements.
  • Assist the Director or Assistant Dean with special projects, i.e. workshops, presentations and off campus visits.
  • Assist in collecting research, attend professional conferences and provide campus relations support.
  • Collaborate with the divisional student success team and communications officer to plan and execute communication strategy for outreach.
  • Communicates and exchanges information with other units of the organization regarding Humanities outreach.

15% - Humanities Divisional Advising
  • Working with the Director, determines barriers, distractions, and complications affecting a student's academic success.
  • In collaboration with the Director, ensures effective training and onboarding of advisers in the division. Coordinates and ensures effective cross-training and outreach / recruitment efforts.
  • Advise interdisciplinary minors housed in the Division as needed.
  • Assist with providing backup advising support when there are temporary vacancies.
  • Collaborate with divisional academic advisors on advising communications for division and departments.

5% - Undergraduate DEI and Special Projects
  • Represents the Division on campus-wide committees related to climate issues and other DEI initiatives.

5% - Assessment of Divisional Advising and Programming
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of student success programming, and makes recommendations to changes to the program to provide better services to students and other stakeholders. (i.e. community college transfer advisors, STARS)

5% - Supervision
  • Manage divisional peer advisors.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Advanced knowledge in theoretical concepts of adult learning. Knowledge on methodologies to enhance student success.
  • Knowledge of a broad academic discipline or learning needs of a broad student category.
  • Ability to implement best practices in academic development and support, as well as cultivation and maintenance of faculty partnerships.
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and apply policies and regulations in specific situations to analyze and solve organizational and operating problems related to student success.
  • Knowledge of various software applications to include advising and student information systems, word processing, presentations, and spreadsheets and databases.
  • Multicultural competencies; knowledge and experience working and interacting effectively with diverse groups of staff, faculty, and student populations.
  • Ability to function effectively in a student-centered environment.
  • Solid interpersonal skills for effective collaboration and problem solving with all levels of academia and staff.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience coordinating and facilitating student success programming.
  • Knowledge of research and theoretical models that influence the application and delivery of advising and academic services (e.g., discipline specific, student-population specific).
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications for students, staff, and external agencies.
