General Description:

The Area Director works collaboratively with the Residence Life staff and the Division of Student Affairs team to create a positive living environment consistent with the University's Catholic and Vincentian mission. The role is a twelve-month, live-in position, reporting to the Associate Director of Residence Life, responsible for the overall management of the university managed residential living communities. The position will provide leadership to the on-campus upperclassmen communities, or the off-campus apartments for upperclassmen, graduate, and law students.

The Area Director is expected to oversee the development and implementation of an upper-class programming model designed to meet the needs of a diverse group of students. The Area Director also builds dynamic relationships with a group of faculty, staff, and University administrators who live and work in the community. The primary focus of the position is developing students through large-scale programming, conduct interventions, and facility management. The Area Director oversees the overall management of their buildings which includes but is not limited to weekly walkthroughs, oversight of the room change process, check-in and check-outs, key management, break housing, and may include mailroom management.

This role supervises a staff of 14-21 Resident Assistants and 2-3 graduate assistants. The Area Director works collaboratively with partners in Campus Activities, Student Wellness, Student Conduct, Campus Ministry, and the Department of Public Safety to provide a vibrant campus life experience that compliments students' educational experience. Additional responsibilities include serving as a hearing officer, advising hall councils, serving in the on-call duty rotation, mediating roommate disputes, coordinating departmental collateral assignments such as RA Selection and RA Training, working with the Offices of Facilities and Public Safety to promote student safety, coordinate summer projects, assist with departmental initiatives as assigned by the Associate Directors/Director of Residence Life, and other duties as assigned. The Area Director position requires evening and weekend work, as well as availability and readiness for in-person and virtual work as the need requires.

Qualifications:

A master's degree in higher education or a related field and 2-3 years of prior Residence Life experience is required. Strong supervision, communication, and managerial skills are necessary. Successful candidates will also be student-focused, have a collaborative work style, an appreciation for the Catholic and Vincentian mission of St. John's University, a demonstrated commitment to supporting first generation college students and students from diverse backgrounds. Must be able to work with minimal supervision, model appropriate boundaries and professional relationships with students and staff. A demonstrated history of sound critical decision-making skills and respect for the organizational dynamics and politics within a large University are preferred.

Responsibilities:

Supervision, selection, training and evaluation of student staff
  • Supervise a staff of 14-21 Resident Assistants and 2-3 graduate assistants.
  • Plan and facilitate weekly staff meetings
  • Conduct bi-weekly meetings with individual staff members
  • Evaluate staff on semester basis
  • Participate in Resident Assistant recruitment and selection process
  • Instruct six week leadership based Resident Assistant course as part of the RA Selection process
  • Facilitate and participate in extensive RA training program, as well as on-going developmental training sessions


Administration/Operations
  • Direct overall management and operation of the off campus or on campus residence halls.
  • Network effectively with third party landlord, utility, and internet providers.
  • Perform weekday and weekend duty
  • Establish office hours for availability to residents and staff
  • Submit administrative reports and forms (e.g. room condition reports, room change forms, health and safety forms, community development logs)
  • Supervise hall opening and closing procedures at the beginning and end of each semester and during vacation periods and breaks
  • Assist with room selection for returning students and room assignment process for new students
  • Maintain inventories of all residence hall equipment and furnishings
  • Establish and advise a council for off campus students
  • Conduct weekly building inspections
  • Coordinate assessment initiatives to determine student satisfaction
  • Maintain close contact with building desk attendants and maintenance staff, and have knowledge of desk procedures
  • Oversee department projects as assigned
  • Manage the Henley and Seton mail rooms.


Programming/Staff Development
  • Supervise staff and off campus residence hall councils in outcomes-based programming development
  • Provide ongoing development for resident assistant staff
  • Track hall programming efforts in university programming database and master calendar
  • Implementing of programs and services in conjunction with other University offices that promote community, scholarship, leadership, and service.
  • Educating students about university policies as they apply to students off campus and local city ordinances
  • Support and attend University events and programs
  • Supervise living/learning community initiatives as assigned
  • Research and present sessions for Professional Staff Development series
  • Submit a program proposal for regional/national conference presentation or an article for publication
  • Partake in university training and development workshops
  • Attend weekly departmental staff meetings/ SCC meeting
  • Attend bi-weekly 1:1 meeting with Associate Director of Residence Life


Student Conduct
  • Communicate guidelines of conduct that protect the individual student's rights and define student responsibility
  • Serve as initial disciplinary hearing officer
  • Generate related conduct correspondence to residents in a timely fashion
  • Adjudicate conduct cases within 72 hours
  • Advise and support Resident Assistants in matters of conduct
  • Track incident reports and sanctions in university judicial database
  • Enforce University and residence hall policies and coordinate with Public Safety as needed


Hall Council/Residence Hall Association
  • Serve as primary advisor to hall councils
  • Establish and advise student leadership body for off campus students/commuter
  • Attend Hall Council general assembly and executive board meetings
  • Meet regularly with Hall Council executive board members
  • Demonstrate support for the RHA and Hall Council as a group by supporting and/or attending programs and events
  • Facilitate the development of Senior RA as the co-advisor of hall council


Compensation:

Competitive salary, two-bedroom campus apartment, partial meal plan, and competitive benefits package

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary for this position is $61,500.
