Job Summary:
Oversees and manages the development and delivery of state-of-the-art, cutting-edge programs designed to empower School of Communication students in making decisions associated with their career goals and objectives. Partners with key internal/external stakeholders to develop and implement strategic initiatives that meet the goals and objectives of academic and career planning. Determines and ensures that necessary resources are obtained and allocated to meet goals and objectives. Oversees compliance with all associated policies, rules and regulations. Coordinates school-wide or university-wide initiatives.
Please Note: The academic calendar yields heavier and lighter periods of work and may require some evening and weekend events. This position will also include some national and international travel.
Specific Responsibilities:
Administration
- Leads development of a strategic plan that will provide state-of-the-art, cutting-edge programs designed to assist students to manage their career experiences.
- Partners with key internal/external stakeholders regarding the student experience; drives innovation and expansion of current resources and services; identifies and implements opportunities for distinctiveness in resource service delivery.
- Oversees & ensures that day-to-day operations are appropriately managed, efficient and effective.
- Leads integration of department strategic plan into the school or divisional strategic plan; ensures that resources are created or obtained.
- Manages customer service; creates associated practices & procedures & metrics to measure success.
- Oversees documentation of agreements between NU and partner institutions, organizations, agencies, etc. ensuring that agreements are complete and reviewed by all necessary NU officials.
- Oversees research and development efforts ensuring that best practices are continuously incorporated into activities.
Technology
- Directs the review of existing technology and leads research that develops systems and associated processes that provide state-of-the-art resources and services to students.
- Leads exploration and vision related to scalable technology solutions designed to build a more effective and efficient support environment for students.
Accounting/Budget
- Plans & implements annual budget including fiscal resource allocation.
- Oversees routine budget reconciliation & analyzes budget position.
- Approves funds reallocation within budget as necessary & appropriate.
- With Alumni Relations and Development, implements fundraising strategies.
Advising/Counseling
- Directs and leads development of a state-of-the-art personalized counseling and advising that focuses on self-assessment, research, job and internship search strategies, reflection, and strategic decision making.
- Oversees & ensures that day-to-day operations are appropriately managed, efficient and effective.
- Leads in the creation of the departmental strategic plans, integrates the department strategic plan into the school or divisional strategic plan; ensures that resources are created or obtained.
- Manages customer service; creates associated practices & procedures & metrics to measure success.
- Connects students with alumni and professionals for employment opportunities. Maintains knowledge of job market trends and hiring practices in a range of fields.
- Implement/provide personalizing counseling and advising that focuses on self-assessment, research, job and internship search strategies, reflection, and strategic decision making.
Relationships
- Leads the strategic direction in regard to employer recruitment; identifies key stakeholders and influencers within employers and other organizations; creates and nurtures mutually beneficial relationships between internal units and employers that support programs and activities and meets career objectives.
- Identifies opportunities, solicits organizations, cultivates and stewards relationships which expand alternative sources of resources and services.
- Meets with key hiring personnel of current and potential employers of students and graduates to strengthen school-employer partnerships; identify potential employment opportunities; and improve University's reputation and visibility.
- Coaches employers on the best way to facilitate employment of students; how to navigate the institution and partner with different units of the school.
- Manages relationships with schools and other campus units with the school or within student affairs
Marketing/Public Relations
- Directs the implementation of innovative marketing/ public relations strategies; targets audiences using appropriate technology; and oversees the creation of marketing materials that increase awareness and value of resources and services.
- Serves as a spokesperson, internally and externally regarding resources and services and changing market/economic conditions.
- Oversees the research of market intelligence by monitoring peers/competitors and sharing information with appropriate groups.
- Integrates the marketing of programs and services across divisions, departments, or schools.
- Identifies and implements long-term strategies and plans to meet program goals.
Programs/Events
- Develops, plans & implements strategies, goals & approach for programs collaborating with internal/external partners to ensure that events are implemented and meet or exceed planned goals.
- Determines goals, objectives, outcome measurements and metrics, financial feasibility, marketing strategies and collaboration opportunities with other internal and external organizations.
- Oversees the ongoing development and refinement of the program's curriculum/topics in consultation with subject matter experts.
- Provides leadership for planning, scheduling, delivering and maintaining program to sustain quality.
- Oversees cross-university recruiting events and activities.
- Oversees cross-university internship funding
- Integrates programming across departments, divisions, or schools
Evaluation
- Oversees development & implementation of evaluation processes, quantitative & qualitative measurements, key performance indicators, etc. that ensure that program benchmarks are successfully attained and communicated in a timely and efficient manner.
- Oversees evaluation processes; recommends & implements changes for enhancement; monitors effectiveness through follow-up evaluation studies.
- Assesses programs and recommends changes that will innovate and invigorate program including cutting edge developments in the field and changes to better meet students and external partners' needs in order to achieve goals.
Compliance
- Oversees development & implementation of processes & procedures that ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, local & NU laws, regulations, policies & procedures.
- Oversees creation &/or implementation of associated training.
- Oversees submission of applicable documents.
Supervises
- Supervises 7-9 staff.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree + 10 years career counseling/advising in higher education or 10 years of industry experience in HR, Media, Film, Television, Entertainment or similar; OR Master’s or JD or higher degree + 8 years career counseling/advising in higher education or appropriate combination of education and 8 years’ industry experience in HR, Media, Film, Television, Entertainment or similar
- Experience developing curricula and co-curricular activities
Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)
- Strong written and verbal communications skills.
- Effective organizational and management skills.
- Demonstrated public relations/marketing abilities to be used on behalf of the School of Communication as a whole and career services specifically.
- Knowledge of current trends and best practices in career services, technology, creative industries, and data analytics
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in a discipline directly related to entertainment management, staffing, employment, career development and planning, or other human resources concern; academic preparation in a student counseling discipline if supported by directly related employer college relations, recruitment, or staffing experience
- Service in various professional organizations including, but not limited to, the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) and those regional affiliates which provide broad opportunities for job development activities
- Career coaching credential in progress or completed
- Demonstrated experience supporting first-generation, low-income (FGLI) and historically underrepresented and minoritized students
- A minimum of 10 years of combined university career services and creative industry experience
