The College of Innovation and Technology at the University of Michigan - Flint is seeking to hire a full time Intermediate Academic Advisor.

CIT Academic advisors are responsible for directly contributing to the colleges retention and degree completion goals. Each advisor manages an assigned student caseload, actively supporting students in all facets of their transition to the university and attainment of their degree. Following a proactive model of advising, advisors engage early and often with their assigned caseload, working to resolve barriers to student persistence. Close monitoring of students’ academic progress, as well as coordination with faculty, academic support services, and other University resources, are expectations of this role.

This position requires independence, critical thinking and a strong ability to follow-up while seeing tasks through to completion.

Student Interaction

  • Advise students on course selection, graduation requirements, co-curricular opportunities, and student rights/responsibilities
  • Work with students to create, monitor, assess and update course schedules and degree-completion plans through the implementation of retention strategies such as Mandatory Advising
  • Assess student needs, referring students to appropriate university resources, such as Financial Aid, Tutorial Support, Writing Center, Counseling and Psychological Services Disability and Accessibility Support Services, and Career Services
  • Intensively monitor and engage with students experiencing academic and/or financial difficulties, including those on academic and/or financial aid probation
  • Initiate and continue to provide regular communication with newly admitted and continuing students in order to provide comprehensive academic advising.
  • Respond to all faculty-initiated and automated alerts timely (preferred within 48 hours)
  • Conduct College Student Inventory (CSI) review meetings with new students
  • Accept referrals from the campus community regarding student needs and issues, following up directly with students, as needed
  • Document all advising appointments/interactions in the appropriate University advising system
  • Attend new student orientation sessions, providing registration support, as needed
  • Maintain close working relationships with UM-Flint partners (Financial Aid, Registrar’s Office, etc.) to ensure a seamless and impactful college experience for students
  • Attend University Academic Advising meetings regularly
  • Utilizes FERPA protected information and conducts confidential conversations to provide these services

Planning and Assessment

  • Use technology and data management to support the implementation and assessment of retention and student outreach programs
  • Contribute to the development of short- and long-term plans for CIT Student Services
  • Maintain relationships with academic and student affairs offices to ensure that students and faculty advisors are aware of resources, workshops, and support systems on campus
  • Work on specialized projects as determined in collaboration with your supervisor
  • Participation in professional development opportunities
  • Carry out other assigned duties consistent with the scope of the position

Recruitment

  • Participate in prospective-student recruitment for the Department.

  • A Bachelor’s degree 
  • A minimum of two years of experience working with students in an academic setting, preferably at the collegiate level
  • High level proficiency in Microsoft Suite software, Adobe Acrobat, Google applications, web editing, Zoom, and demonstrated motivation to find and use new software to enhance department projects
  • Excellent communication skills with strong written and interpersonal skills; ability to successfully work with all levels of staff and faculty
  • Knowledge of FERPA policy
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal communication and empathy
  • Master’s Degree preferred
  • Demonstrated record of creating and implementing excellent student-centered programming
  • Demonstrated experience with data collection, summary, and quality improvement techniques
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse students populations
  • Knowledge of Web Focus, Banner, Target X, Business Objective, and Degree Works
  • Prior experience working in higher education
  • Knowledge of University policies and practices

A consistent hybrid work schedule (some days on campus and some days working remotely) is available for this position at this time. However, this is subject to change based upon the duties of the position and the needs of the department.
