Our UW TACOMA OFFICE OF STUDENT TRANSITIONS & SUCCESS (STS) AND THE VETERAN AND MILITARY RESOURCE CENTER (VMRC) have an outstanding opportunity for a MILITARY CONNECTED CAREER COACH. Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Career Development and Education and the Director of the Veteran and Military Resource Center, this individual will serve as the primary career counselor for UWT military-connected students and alumni, implement and assess outreach efforts in relation to academic majors, internships, careers, and employment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Career Counseling
  • Counsel military-connected students and alumni individually and in groups concerning majors, career decisions, internship/job search strategies, networking, resume development, interview skills, salary negotiation, and certificate, undergraduate, and graduate school planning.
  • Educate military-connected students on the development stages of their careers, including: administration and interpretation of career assessments(i.e MBTI, Strong Interest Inventory, CliftonStrengths), major discernment, exploration of the world of work, and the search for employment or undergraduate/graduate school options.
  • Identify and promote technology resources aimed at assisting students with personal, career and academic exploration.

    Career Education Outreach
  • Build internal collaborative relationships and serve as a point of contact and resource for students, advisers, and faculty on major and career related issues.
  • Build external collaborative relationships in Pierce County with peer educational institutions to design a county-wide sustainable system supporting resource sharing (job postings, events, etc.) to benefit military-connected students across the South Puget Sound Region.
  • Develop and.present programs and workshops for groups of military-connected students and UWT alumni in Pierce County.
  • Identify campus-wide needs related to additional outreach opportunities in collaboration with faculty, staff and students.
  • Develop educational resources and oversee online learning resources specifically geared toward military-connected students and alumni.

    PAVE (Peer Advisors for Veteran Education) Mentors Training and Coordination
  • Coordinate the education and involvement of PAVE mentors in career development/counseling principles, resources and information for military-connected students.
  • Responsible for PAVE Mentor career development activity schedule, developing training materials, coaching and goal setting.
    Recruiting & Employer Relations
  • Coordinate with Employer Relations Manager to implement programs and services aimed at building collaborative relationships with employers (especially those inclined to support/recruit veterans and military-connected individuals) to benefit military-connected students in Pierce County and UWT military-connected alumni in securing both internships and jobs aligned with their career aspirations.
  • Implement programs and services aimed at building collaborative relationships with employers. Plan and implement Career Fairs on the UW Tacoma campus for students and alumni.

    Serve on Student Affairs and UW Tacoma committees

    Other duties as assigned

    Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in counseling or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Two years of experience counseling students, with demonstrated familiarity providing career advising; experience working with military-connected students preferred.
  • Demonstrated excellence in public speaking, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with students from diverse ethnic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Familiarity with the use of technologies such as social media (Facebook, Twitter) and professional media (Linkedln, portfolio programs).
  • Experience managing confidential and sensitive information.
  • Ability to collaborate with constituents across campus and in the community.

    Desired Qualifications

    Master’s degree in counseling, student development, or a related area.
  • Knowledge of careers specific to Tacoma and the Puget Sound area.
  • Knowledge of career resources available for military-connected students and alumni.
  • Familiarity with all academic areas within the UW Tacoma.
  • Demonstrated ability to create engaging curricula for a wide range of ages and settings.
  • Experience and knowledge of career development theory and practice.
  • Experience and knowledge of evaluation and assessment methodologies.
