With over 650 student-athletes participating in UW's 22 sports programs, the department of Intercollegiate Athletics is committed to providing student-athletes with the ability to compete for national and conference championships while working toward a degree from one of the world's leading public research universities.
This position reports to the Senior Associate Athletic Director of Advancement, within the Tyee Club. The Director of the Big W Club and Engagement Programs will be responsible for the leadership, management, strategic planning, oversight, and execution of a comprehensive former student-athlete outreach program serving all alumni of the University of Washington’s Athletic Department.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Current and Former Athlete Engagement Strategy and Development In collaboration with the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Advancement, Assistant Director of Events and Big W Engagement, head coaches and sport administrators, the Director will develop and execute annual engagement plans for former student-athletes across our 22 sports programs. The Director will work closely with the Assistant Director of Events and Big W Engagement to implement a wide range of programming that incorporates bringing alumni back to campus, and engaging current student-athletes, for touchpoint opportunities that foster a lifelong connection to Husky Athletics. The Director of the Big W Club and Engagement Programs will attend one on one, team and community events, as well as national conferences on behalf of Husky Athletics. A key element of this position will be to establish relationships with current student-athletes to serve as a role model and convey to them the strength of Husky tradition.
Boundless Futures Former Student-Athlete Development Program The Director of the Big W Club and Engagement Programs, in conjunction with the Assistant Athletic Director of Student-Athlete Development will develop a strategic plan to bring mentoring and networking focused communities to current and former student-athletes. In partnership with the Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Development, the Director will cultivate relationships in a variety of career fields to facilitate partnerships, job shadowing, informational interview opportunities, and career placement for alumni and current student-athletes. This position will work in close partnership with the University of Washington Alumni Association and Career Services, to cross promote opportunities and connections for student-athlete alumni. This also includes the oversight of “Husky Landing” – the online platform that connects alumni to networking and career opportunities. When appropriate, the Director will assist former student-athletes in finding career counseling services that includes resume/cover letter coaching, interview preparation and transition resources and services.
Recognition Programming The Director of the Big W Club and Engagement Programs will chair the Department’s Recognition Committee. This Committee is responsible for the recognition of former student-athletes and their achievements across the athletic footprint. This position will also oversee the Husky Legends program, identifying former student athletes from our 22 sport programs to be honored at a home competitions. Working closely with a larger committee, the Director will manage the Husky Hall of Fame nomination process. Once selections have been made, the Director will work closely with the Assistant Director of Events and Big W Club Engagement on all recognition portions of the bi-annual event. Compliance with the rules and regulations of the University, the NCAA, the Pac-12 Conference, the State of Washington and any other governing body is of paramount importance to the University. The overall responsibility of this position is to ensure the successful operation of the program in full compliance with all such rules and regulations. As a condition of employment, the Employee shall be required to participate in rules education programs offered by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Bachelor's degree in athletic administration, development, business, or a related field. Six or more years of progressively responsible experience in athletic administration, alumni relations, fundraising, program development, education, coaching or student affairs. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and according to Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulations. Skill in working independently and following through on duties with minimal direction.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS Outstanding communication skills both oral and written, including skill in writing memos and reports. Strong organizational and time management skills and the ability to work under pressure. Ability to interact diplomatically with individuals of various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds. Ability to establish working relationships and interact collaboratively and effectively with other staff, student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and the university community. Outstanding listening, analytical, and problem-solving skills in work with academic staff and student-athletes. Ability to effectively counsel and advice students with professional, academic, and/or personal questions and concerns.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Willingness to work night and weekend hours as needed, especially in peak demand times of the academic year.
