Position Purpose:

Bates Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is dedicated to the holistic development of its students and as members of the Bates community that embraces diversity, equity and inclusion in all facets of its teaching, learning, working and living. CAPS provides an array of short-term services, including assessments, same day appointments, individual counseling, group therapy, crisis intervention, psychiatric evaluations/medication management and consultation. Additionally, CAPS collaborates with college partners offering outreach and programming to underscore community values of connection, inclusion and belonging, and wellness and well-being across the campus.

The Associate Director (AD) is a key member of the Leadership Team who, together with the Director, is co-responsible for managing the day to day operations of CAPS, serving Bates students and its community. The AD will share daily administrative duties with the Director of CAPS, assist the Director in evaluating and optimizing trauma informed, gender affirming, and culturally sensitive clinical services. The AD provides short-term individual and group counseling, assessments, crisis intervention, clinical consultation, and serves as a mental health consultant to the Bates College community. In the absence of the Director, the AD assumes administrative responsibility for all aspects of the center’s operations, supervising staff, and decision making to ensure the smooth delivery of all essential services. The AD will collaborate with the Director on strategic planning and implementation of identified CAPS goals and initiatives, as deemed important to optimize the use of resources addressing the clinical needs of students within a brief treatment model of care. The AD will support the strategic needs and mission of CAPS through community partnerships that offer opportunities to further serve students mental health needs through innovative and creative partnerships and other designated projects, including the expansion of the graduate training program.

Job Duties:

Clinical

• Provide clinically informed and culturally sensitive short-term individual counseling, group therapy and crisis intervention.
• Consult and support all CAPS clinicians and assist with the supervision of graduate interns doing their clinical placement.
• Identify resources and refer students needing specialized care or long-term treatment.
• Manage crisis situations, including hospitalizations, and networking with campus partners and external providers.
• Actively partner and offer coordination of care with Health Services and with external providers, when appropriate.
• Provide mental health consultation and guidance to faculty, staff, and parents.
• In collaboration with the Director, expand policies and procedures to guide the center’s day to day practices.
• Utilize student-centered, trauma-informed, gender inclusive, and culturally sensitive practices that promote resiliency, empowerment and self-determinism.
• Actively participate in administrative and clinical meetings offering input and leadership.
• Serve as on-call staff for emergent situations in which the CAPS on-call system (Protocall) requires professional consultation. On-call counselors are also responsible for communicating pertinent information to the Dean on call and/or campus partners, when appropriate.

Administrative

• Serve as a leader advancing diversity, equity and inclusion within CAPS and across the college.
• Support efforts to recruit, train, and retain a diverse clinical staff that reflect the diverse identities amongst the student body.
• Assist with onboarding new clinical staff, training and professional development.
• Maintain clear, accurate and timely documentation for clinical records in Titanium, the electronic medical record system.
• Conduct ongoing assessment and evaluation of clinical services.
• Actively support strategic planning of CAPS goals and initiatives and the expansion of a graduate intern training program.
• Lend assistance and oversight to the CAPs website, marketing of services, and outreach requests.
• Collaborate with key campus partners such as medical providers, health educators, Residence Life coordinators, and athletic trainers.
• Coordinate care for students requiring medical leaves of absence or students of concern with the Office of Student Support and Community Standards.
• Liaise with the Office of Accessible Education regarding student disabilities and the provision of reasonable accommodations.
• Ensure departmental compliance with applicable state and federal laws and mandates as well as relevant departmental policies and procedures.

Educational

• In collaboration with CAPS colleagues, offer inclusive workshops and programming to students and the broader Bates community.
• In partnership with the Director, collaborate with the Office of Intercultural Education to co-create and co-facilitate culturally sensitive and trauma-informed programs and initiatives to support all students, particularly those from historically underrepresented and underserved populations, including students of color, LGBTQ students, international students, students with disabilities, and first-generation college students.
• Serve as a resource for the college community and student groups on mental health and wellness advocacy issues, and support through psychoeducational program initiatives.
• Provide consultation regarding mental health issues for a variety of constituents including students, parents, staff, and faculty.
• Adhere to applicable laws, regulations, and professional codes of ethics and maintain licensure/CEU requirements as required by discipline.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

• Master’s or doctoral degree in Clinical or Counseling Psychology, Counselor Education, or Social Work from an accredited program.
• Valid clinical licensure in current state, with ability to obtain licensure in Maine within 90 days of employment.

Experience

• 5+ years of experience as a licensed clinician and supervisor.
• 3-5 years of experience in a college counseling center or equivalency working with college age population.
• Clinical and lived experience working effectively with students across diverse identities and backgrounds.
• Experience providing  short-term individual and group counseling.
• Dialectic Behavioral Therapy experience desirable.

Skills and Knowledge

• Knowledge of contemporary professional practices in the delivery of trauma-informed, gender-affirming and culturally sensitive counseling and psychological services.
• Knowledge of ethical and legal issues related to college student mental health.
• Demonstrated interest and skills in data analysis and using technology to enhance delivery of services and programs.
• Demonstrated analytical skills to research and analyze data and information from a variety of sources to make sound recommendations and decisions.
• High level of personal and professional integrity, strong sense of ethics, and respect for privacy and confidentiality.
• Ability to set priorities to achieve objectives and to manage multiple, diverse assignments/projects.
• Demonstrated supervisory, administrative, and program management experience in a college setting.
• Demonstrated awareness of and commitment to ongoing training in cultural sensitivity through lens of diversity, equity and inclusion.
• Experience working with students from culturally diverse populations, as well as underrepresented and/or underserved populations.
• Ability to work well with a team of clinical professionals, as well as with campus and community partners.
• Ability to effectively manage during a crisis, with sensitivity.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong leadership skills and ability to effectively lead group discussions.
• Ability to remain composed, approachable, and to demonstrate poise under stress.
• Strong presentation skills and ability to develop dynamic presentations.
