Departmental Overview

The Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS) is housed in both the College of Engineering and the Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS). The College of Engineering at UC Berkeley is recognized for its educational and research excellence, consistently ranking among the top three Engineering colleges in the United States. With approximately 230 regular faculty members, 2150 graduate students and 3450 undergraduate students located in seven academic departments, Engineering is the second largest college on the Berkeley campus. Operating expenditures for the College as a whole exceed $190.5 million annually.

EECS is the largest Department on the UC Berkeley campus consisting of over 130 faculty, adjunct, active emeriti and PIR appointments, 3,600+ undergraduates between the College of Engineering and Letters and Science, more than 700+ graduate students, and 60+ staff members. The EECS Center for Student Affairs (CSA) provides a centralized function that serves the needs of students, faculty, and staff in meeting the academic mision of teaching and research from student recruitment and admissions through graduation and alumni relations.

This position reports to the Director, Undergraduate Affairs and Advising. Responsibilities for this position include providing a wide range of student services duties and responsibilities for an academic department/school/college or organization. This position provides educational services to current and prospective students, faculty, campus constitutes, and the general public. The position also provides assistance to EECS and L&S Computer Science majors and intended majors in academic advising, recruitment, financial aid, admissions, student orientations and events and related programs.

Responsibilities

30% Academic Advising:

• Applying advanced Student Services concepts, provides the most complex student services to the organization's management, faculty and students. Identifies and refers for resolution intricate student issues/grievances such as alleged discrimination, complex grade dispute issues, and students' personal crises; recommends petition exceptions that affect the requirements of multiple departments; facilitates new course approval through interaction with the Coordination of College Policy, Academic Senate, or similar organization.
• Provides advising to students from the two largest majors on campus: Letters and Science Computer Science and the College of Engineering EECS majors. Identifies and counsels students who are struggling academically and recommends interventions when needed. Disseminates regular timely communications of important policies, procedures, deadlines and other information pertaining to student life. Implement innovative and cutting-edge advising programs, workshops and services which effectively meet the needs of a changing student body including specific cohorts of students (e.g., transfers, new students). Work with staff across campus to address trends.
• Initiate/update degree checks and verify degree completion for BA candidates. Confirm students have met requirements for degree. Review records and certify completion of degree requirements for CS major and for CS and EECS minor and honors programs.

25% Program Oversight:

• Within an academic department/school/college provides, and makes recommendations for, the improvement of the Manages the oversight of and advises students on policies surrounding the following programs: EECS Honors Program, EECS Minor Program, Faculty Advising, and EE Reader Hiring. Arranges ad hoc workshops on select student topics such as mental health, undergraduate research and faculty-student interaction.
• Financial Aid: Recommends resolution of extremely sensitive, specialized, and/or complex financial aid issues; and/or administers department's/school's/college's scholarship and fellowship funds.
• Events: Plans and/or assists with complex, high-visibility student events, and ensures that implementation is effective and lasting. Spearheads events such as EECS Student Awards, CS Education Day, Commencement, New Student Orientation, Transfer Day and yield events as needed.

20% Recruitment and Admissions:

• Advises department/school/college on outreach strategies, and helps identify targeted institutions to meet organization's goals; coordinates, reviews and advises chair/dean and faculty on transferability and applicability of non-UC Berkeley courses.
• Plans and implements outreach programs with specifically targeted institutions; advises prospective applicants on necessary academic preparation; appropriateness of program as it pertains to the prospective applicant's goals.
• In collaboration with the Director of Student Diversity and EECS Undergraduate Affairs, works with prospective majors in both EECS and L&S Computer Science. Assists with determining admissions to the Computer Science Major at the departmental level. Enlists the support of faculty in difficult admission decision cases. Serves as a liaison for faculty evaluation of pending articulation agreements with California Community Colleges.

20% Department/School/College Policies:

• Advises chairs/deans on the formulation of department/school/college policy by advising them on areas needing clarification and identifying solutions; analyzes the consequences of organization's academic policies and recommends new or changed policies; recommends solutions to organization's problems without precedent. Make recommendations on exceptions to policy and determine how such decisions will impact the Department. Serves on the Undergraduate Study Committee, providing curricular expertise and data analysis. Advise Department on long-term curricular issues for the undergraduate programs. Participates in professional student services committees that develop policies/procedures with nationwide impact.

5% Professional Development:

• Participates in professional student services committees that develop policies/procedures with nationwide impact.
• Maintains and updates knowledge of College and campus student affairs issues by taking appropriate classes, attending campus-wide Student Affairs meetings and networking with peers. Keeps abreast of national trends related to advising support as well as best practices in student affairs administration.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
• FERPA Certification
• Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
• Skills in monitoring/assessing people, processes or services, to make improvements.
• Skills in project management, social perceptiveness to be aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
• Ability in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, persuasion, leadership.
• Interpersonal skills. Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
• Proven ability to create and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, and students.
• Ability to work as a team member.
• Excellent verbal and written skills.
• Strong working knowledge of departmental and college policies and procedures for undergraduate matters.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree preferred.
• Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.



The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $67,000 to $93,100 annually. This is a full time career position eligible for full benefits.
