The Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons (VP&S) is recruiting a Sr. Associate/Associate Dean for Student Affairs. The position, requiring eligibility for a faculty appointment, is an 80%-100% time full time role responsible for the oversight and organization of the comprehensive student affairs program for VP&S medical students. The Sr. Associate/Associate Dean along with the student affairs staff and faculty are engaged with students in all phases of their VP&S education, leading to the successful completion of the medical degree. The Sr./Associate Dean functions as a primary student advocate in responding directly to student needs and providing resources to assist students during the course of their education. The Sr. Associate/Associate Dean oversees support for student success including referral for student academic and personal support, and serves as the liaison (an ex-officio role), to committees that monitor academic progress. In addition, the Sr. Associate/Associate Dean has oversight of career advising, including advising and mentoring of students through the residency application and match. The Sr. Associate/Associate Dean supervises the Office of Student Affairs, including student affairs professionals and faculty advisory deans. The Sr./Associate Dean will create a culture that values a team-based and collaborative approach to supporting students. Maintaining and/or enhancing high levels of student satisfaction with services is expected.

The Sr. Associate/Associate Dean for Student Affairs will serve as a member of the medical school's leadership team who will work across VP&S with a focus on continuously improving the student experience, and optimizing student success and engagement.

This position reports to the Vice Dean for Education.

This position will be appointed at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor commensurate with experience and accomplishments and is an 90% administrative, 10% clinical position (or 80% administrative, 20% clinical position – negotiable based on candidate's clinical commitments).

Areas of Responsibility:

Lead the Office of Student Affairs, which includes

  • Student events, orientations, and ceremonies (White Coat, Student –Clinician ceremony, Match Day, Class Day,  VP&S Graduation)
  • Student support services including facilitating academic, health, and mental health support through referral to other appropriate resources as needed
  • Facilitating and strategic planning for student academic success, in collaboration with The VP&S Center for Education Research and Evaluation (CERE) and the Office of Curricular Affairs, and monitoring the academic progress of students, in collaboration with the latter office
  • Career advising, preparation of Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE), and all support and events leading to and including residency application and match
  • Student extracurricular activities/VP&S Club
  • Fostering positive learning environment, in collaboration with CERE, CUIMC Office of Professionalism, New York Presbyterian Office of Professionalism and Learning Environment, and Associate Dean for Medical Student Professionalism in the Learning Environment
  • Overseeing student disciplinary proceedings
  • Ensuring school compliance with all LCME accreditation standards that relate to student affairs
  • Serving on various assigned committees
  • Managing the budget and staffing for the Office of Student Affairs

Student Support and Services

  • Directs students to resources, policies and procedures, and provides guidance to students as needed
  • Provides triage and assistance for students experiencing personal difficulties
  • In collaboration with CUIMC Student Health on Haven, facilitates students' access to resources and counseling for medical, psychological, personal, and academic concerns, and emergencies as needed
  • Serves as advocate for student concerns and needs with the faculty and administration
  • Fosters a safe, healthy, and supportive learning environment, including the planning for and monitoring of:
    • Mistreatment awareness, reporting, and mitigation
    • Supporting students' academic success by providing initiatives that help students make ethical decisions, stay safe and healthy, and prepare for their future endeavors upon graduation
  • Facilitates cultural, social, and recreational offerings to foster an inclusive student community and enable participation by all students
  • Participates in various committees responsible for monitoring student progress through all years of medical school training
  • In collaboration with the school's registrar, manages enrollment status and facilitates verification and certification of credentials for graduates of the program
  • Provides guidance to students regarding excused absences, extended leaves of absence, and overall academic progress
  • Provides student support and collaborates with the Associate Dean for Student Research in support of students in dual-degree programs or participating in enrichment years, such as a research year.
  • Coordinates with bursar, registrar, academic technology, and financial aid to address student needs

Career Advising and Residency Services

  • Oversees Career Services in the delivery of services designed to promote career exploration including residency and alternative careers, dual degrees, residency application and match preparedness, and connects students to information about residency programs
  • Trains and provides oversight of career advisors and Advisory Deans/coaches
  • In collaboration with the Advisory Deans and Student Affairs staff, creates a MSPE for each graduating student for their residency application that includes an objective summary of the student's salient experiences, attributes, and academic performance
  • Assists senior students in assembling credentials for residency application
  • Serves as liaison and communicates student-related concerns to the appropriate administrative officers of the Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons, affiliated hospitals, and community organizations

Student Engagement, Student Activities and Student Wellness

  • Oversees system of community support, inclusive of Advisory Deans, career advisors, specialty advisors, big sibs, peer advocates, and peer mentors
  • Oversees  and innovates in regards to student programming to foster student engagement and well-being, including

House Pilot' and Advisory Deans / peer mentors/ FCM coaches

  • Oversees VP&S Club and Student Activities
  • Provides guidance related to student honor societies
  • Oversees collection of student feedback through the VP&S Survey, AAMC Y2Q and GQ surveys, and advocates for relevant changes
  • Collaborates with the Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging to enhance academic, social, and emotional development through curricular and co-curricular events and activities
  • Promotes students' leadership skills through student government, committee representation, engagement in interest groups, and co-curricular groups

 

 

Qualifications

Applicants must have:

  • an M.D. or Ph.D.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in medical school academic administration either in a dean's office position or as a course director, clerkship director, or residency training director
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and be able to work collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team
  • Excellent executive function skills including being detail oriented, well organized, and possessing excellent time management skills
  • Strong communication skills bringing deep and demonstrated expertise in medical education/student affairs incorporating research, scholarship, practice, and emerging trends into the School's plans, and representing VP&S internally and externally
  • Demonstrated ability in sound judgement and decision-making skills
  • Strong theoretical and philosophical foundation in student development and student support
  • Strong understanding of contemporary diversity, equity, and inclusion concepts and issues, especially as they apply to student recruitment and retention, the educational impact of diversity, and the policy and legal dynamics of inclusion and equity work
  • Broad awareness/understanding of theories of change needed for comprehensive student success and completion and a proven record of change management and positive student success outcomes
  • Excellent problem solving, leadership, networking, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to execute multiple initiatives simultaneously, promote teamwork, and serve as ambassador for the School and Office of Medical Education

Salary Range: $250,000-$300,000
