Responsibilities: | In partnership with the Career Center, the International Student Career Advisor is an integral member of the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) team who provides internship/job search support, F-1 status compliance and professional development advising to UMBC’s international student community with a specific emphasis on those pursuing advanced degrees in data science and computing/engineering. The ISSS team in the Center for Global Engagement (CGE) coordinates education abroad, immigration services, international partnerships, international student recruitment and related functions that empowers UMBC to extend beyond borders. The UMBC Career Center, within the Division of Student Affairs, is recognized as a valued partner with exemplary student and employer engagement along with strong first destination career outcomes of our graduates. As a Designated School Official (DSO), the Advisor provides guidance to F-1 students related to their internships, immigration regulations and university policies. The Advisor continuously develops expertise on issues related to the career needs of international students, and shares this knowledge with employers and colleagues across campus. This position will serve as an advocate and ally for the career needs and interests of the international student and scholar community by fostering strong and collaborative relationships with key campus and community stakeholders. The full-time Advisor reports directly to the Assistant Director of International Student and Scholar Services with three days of direct liaison work within the Career Center. Responsibilities include: -
Advise international students on the job/internship search, Curricular Practical Training (CPT) process, creating a U.S. style resume along with interview prep via in-person/virtual appointments and e-mail. -
Process CPT and internship practicum requests as the primary internship practicum coordinator for students pursuing advanced degrees in data science. -
Research, identify and help cultivate job and internship opportunities for international students in data science and computing/engineering. -
Collaborate and communicate with the Graduate Program Director and faculty in designated degree areas about internships and CPT policies and regulations. -
Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) for the university’s F-1 international student program and maintain individual immigration records in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) database and UMBC’s immigration case management system. -
Maintain an accurate and up-to-date knowledge of immigration regulations and procedures in the F categories. -
Facilitate and support a variety of programming and communications in collaboration with campus and our EduCo partner designed to ensure a successful transition to UMBC and to support retention and career readiness of international students. -
Support strategic initiatives, special projects, and reporting within both the Center for Global Engagement and Career Center. Will include reporting on career/OPT outcomes (aggregate data) on EduCo recruited students and all international students completed on an annual basis (June/July). |
Required Minimum Qualifications: | - Bachelor's Degree
- Minimum of one year of direct experience in career advising/coaching, international services, employer relations, higher education or a related field.
- Interest in working effectively with people from different cultural, academic, ethnic and linguistic backgrounds.
- Eligibility to receive approval from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to serve as Designated School Official and approval from the U.S. Department of State to serve as an Alternate Responsible Officer (requires U.S. citizenship or legal permanent residence).

Experience in career coaching/advising with a highly motivated student population. -
Knowledgeable of the difficulties international students face while seeking career opportunities in the U.S. and sensitive in the nuances of career advising. -
Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills; attention to detail and ability to conduct regular research to stay abreast of trends. -
Ability to work independently, in collaboration with others and under pressure. |
