Description of Department: SUNY Oswego Department of Intercollegiate Athletics sponsors 24 intercollegiate varsity athletic programs as a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC).

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at the State University of New York at Oswego invites applications to fill a part time Head Tennis Coach.

Review Date:  Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

Compensation:  Minimum salary $15,000 with no benefits.

Date of Appointment:  As soon as possible

Description of Responsibilities:  

  • Responsible for the overall leadership of the men's and women's tennis program. 
  • Work within the mission of SUNY Oswego, Division of Student Affairs, and Department of Intercollegiate Athletics to provide a competitive, unique, and memorable collegiate athletic experience for student-athletes. 
  • Support SUNY Oswego, Student Affairs, and IA's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. 
  • Recruit and retain academically and athletically qualified student-athletes within the scope of the SUNYAC or affiliated conference, NCAA, and institution guidelines, as well as, reaching annual recruitment and retention goals. 
  • Develop a recruitment philosophy that reflects recruitment of student-athletes from geographically and demographically diverse populations. Develop positive working relationships with faculty, staff, and campus partners to assist in the recruitment process.   
  • Arrange all campus visitations, including itineraries, academic appointments, campus and community tours, student-athlete hosts, lodging, meals, game admission, and entertainment. 
  • Work with the department's compliance office to ensure student-athletes meet applicable eligibility requirements and prepare all necessary forms on a timely basis. 
  • Encourage and promote academic excellence from student-athletes. Assist in implementation of academic support services including study hall, monitoring of individual and team academic performance, and referral to appropriate institutional academic resources.  
  • Build, develop, and maintain contacts and relations with athletic alumni, high school and club coaches, and benefactors.
  • Work with the department's communication office on providing program information and statistics to media and fans via press releases, media guides, game programs, website, and interviews. 
  • Establish and ensure communication and enforcement of SUNY Oswego, IA, and team regulations regarding student conduct and behavior. 
  • Develop a competitive program that promotes sportsmanship and responsible behavior both during and outside of athletic competition. 
  • Effectively instruct players on rules, regulations, strategies, and techniques of the sport. 
  • Oversee all necessary administrative responsibilities for the program including assisting in preparation and operation within the annual budget, practice and competition schedules, travel arrangements, recruitment activities, and fundraising activities.
  • Fully disclose the acceptance of any funds and/or gifts and document all these expenditures in support of the program.  Accurately record the amounts and purpose of donations and fundraising activities.  Monitor fundraising activities for team purposes after gaining the approval of the DIA.
  • Perform public relations duties and activities with faculty, students, parents, contributors, alumni, and institution administrators. Promote respective sport at local, state, and national level. 
  • Work closely with athletic training staff to ensure the safety and health of student-athletes. Acknowledge that the athletic trainer and team physician have the final decision on return to practice and competition of student-athletes. 
  • Supervise assistant coaches, graduate assistants, volunteers, student coaches, and student workers. 
  • Assist in oversight of athletic facilities. Submit work orders to Associate Director of Intercollegiate Athletics for Internal Operations.
  • Possess current certification in appropriate level of First Aid and CPR e.g. ("First Aid for Coaches", "Responding to Emergencies", "Adult CPR" or equivalents).
  • Contribute to the overall success of the intercollegiate athletics program by performing all other duties as assigned by the DIA or other campus leaders. 

RESPONSIBILITY TO COOPERATE:

Staff members must possess a commitment and responsibility for adhering to all rules and regulations of State University of New York at Oswego, SUNYAC or affiliated conference, and the NCAA. Staff members must cooperate with and furnish the NCAA, SUNYAC, or affiliated conference, and/or the institution with truthful and complete information concerning involvement in or knowledge of rules violations. Any person who is found in violation of NCAA regulations shall be subject to disciplinary or corrective actions a set forth in the provisions of the NCAA enforcement procedures, including suspension without pay or termination of employment for significant or repeated violations.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree at time of application
  • Previous coaching experience
  • Strong working knowledge of sport's skills and training methods
  • The ability to identify and attract student-athletes from diverse backgrounds
