Job Summary:

The College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota invites applications for an Area Coordinator. This is a twelve (12) month Residential Life position. Under the responsibility of the Director of Residential Life, the Area Coordinator is responsible for the overall operation of a residential area on campus ranging from one-seven (1-7) buildings housing 350 – 550 total residents. The Area Coordinator is a professional staff member who provides support and leadership to residential students.

Key Results/Responsibilities:

The Area Coordinator position supervises staff, mentors residents, manages day-to-day operations for buildings, performs administrative tasks, serves on-call, and assists with emergency response efforts. The Area Coordinator has additional opportunities for involvement in the department and College, and is encouraged to belong and contribute to professional associations.

Mentoring and Advising:
  • Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the programming model for designated area
  • Serve as a positive role model for students. Is sensitive and responsive to students' emotional, personal, behavioral, and academic needs; advising and making appropriate referrals. Attends to the health and safety of residents in medical, psychological, and crisis/emergency situations
  • Support the residential curriculum by creating learning activity facilitation guides to carry out the educational goals and learning outcomes. As a member of the development team, work with the Residential Life professional staff, Resident Advisors (RAs), students, and other stakeholders to solicit feedback and make improvements. Create learning outcomes assessment strategies and review data. Train RAs on curricular matters.
  • With a student-centered approach, assist with retention efforts and resident outreach from the Students of Concern committee.
  • Actively seeks to become acquainted with and supports residential students by attending hall activities and campus events throughout the academic year.
  • Identify, develop, and implement out-of-the-class learning opportunities within the residence halls, including programming and training initiatives based on learning outcomes and best practices. Promotes leadership in the residence halls.
  • Actively seeks to improve diversity awareness, positive community, decision-making, social justice, and civic engagement programs, as well as college acclimation strategies within the residence halls through collaboration and development of new initiatives.
  • Assist students in managing roommate relations, including mediations and approving and facilitating room changes.

Supervising:
  • Supervise up to 12 total Resident Advisors (RAs), including one Lead RA
  • As part of the professional staff team, recruits, selects, trains, supervises, coaches, evaluates, and documents paraprofessional staff (Lead RAs and RAs.
  • Challenge and support student staff through best practices of motivation and holding paraprofessionals accountable. Ensures completion of assigned tasks.
  • Hold weekly staff and bi-weekly individual meetings with staff and works with the area staff as a whole as well as each individual RA to develop skills and grow in the position.
  • Review RA duty logs on a daily basis. Coordinates duty schedule for assigned on-campus residence halls, and ensures staff meet on-call expectations.

Administrative:
  • Maintain oral and written communication with the Director of Residential Life. Communicate with students, parents, and other campus departments in a timely and effective manner in person, by phone and e-mail.
  • Attend meetings, the primary way of communication, decision-making, and processing of information. Some important meetings for the Area Coordinator position include the following: weekly Residential Life professional staff meeting, weekly Students of Concern meeting, conduct hearing meetings, one-on-one weekly meeting with the Director, weekly RA staff meeting, and one-on-one biweekly individual meeting with each RA. Manages google personal calendar and email exceptionally-well.
  • Demonstrate ability to meet and enforce deadlines, take initiative, and work independently to carry out complex assignments while being detail-oriented.
  • Value the importance of and actively seek to network with others to learn and implement best practices.
  • Exhibits a commitment to a student-centered approach, demonstrating initiative in reaching out and building relationships. Is a visible, approachable, and accessible on-campus professional staff presence. Is available and interacts with students, staff, and faculty on a daily basis.
  • Plans and implements RA training programs as necessary. Assists with room selection process.
  • Serves as a designated project manager to accomplish departmental mission and goals, including three or more of the following areas: summer conferencing, RA recruitment and selection, appreciation and recognition, programming and curriculum management, staff training, break housing, Living Agreement process, Room Condition Form process, campus representative for conduct software – Advocate, and staff manual ongoing edits.
  • Facilitate and track programming in the residence halls. Oversees budgets for designated RAs, manages purchasing card, and reconciles monthly statements.
  • Assist in compiling and recording overall assessment data.
  • Assist with special events such as Orientation, Admitted Students Day, Admissions Open House events, Convocation, Commencement, campus traditions, and large campus events.
  • Serves on departmental, divisional, and campus wide committees and completes administrative tasks and projects as assigned.
  • Enforce the Student Code of Conduct by serving as a hearing officer for designated area when students are referred for policy violations
  • Participate in professional staff on-call rotation and serve as primary contact for emergencies
  • Serve as a conduct hearing officer and adjudicate cases involving policy violations
  • Organize and facilitate, with RA staff, one campus wide event a year (based on area designation)
  • Facilitate housing assignments; managing area occupancy, overseeing the facility management of buildings; and maintaining an environment within the area that is conductive to living and learning Coordinates Health, Maintenance, and Safety Inspections in each room several times each semester. Supervises and directs the staff in the opening and closing of housing at all breaks; assists as necessary with administrative tasks in this area. ACs are required to be on campus and available to work RA training and hall opening the three weeks prior to students returning in August; the week immediately preceding and following students' departure in December; the two weeks immediately preceding and following students' departure in May; thus, time away from campus must be scheduled during other time periods.
  • Assists with the move-out process of room condition forms as well as the assessment of damages, billing coordination, and appeal request consideration process.
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

Education and Experience:
A Bachelor's Degree in social sciences, business management, or related field; AND two (2) years of professional academic program planning and management experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience is required.

  • One to two (1-2) years related experience in college or university operated residence halls or apartments and summer conferencing is required
  • Ability to establish and maintain a living learning environment

  • Ability to plan, prioritize, schedule, and coordinate simultaneous activities
