Reporting to the Chief of Staff and Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives, the Director of Student Affairs Research and Assessment builds, supports, and sustains a culture of strategic analysis and informed decision-making by collecting, analyzing, translating, and communicating data from key operational areas within Students Affairs. In collaboration with other University leaders, the director works cross functionally to support strategic institutional student success goals, including retention and graduation. The Director provides leadership to Student Affairs departments in the development and implementation of assessment and research strategies designed to improve student services, co-curricular efforts and student success efforts.

Position Specific Accountabilities

  • Oversee divisional efforts to expand the potential for student success by using research methods to create a data-driven environment designed to improve retention and graduation rates. Serve as the point person within the division and collaborate across the University to identify, advise, and monitor key at-risk student segments. Work collaboratively with Student Success leadership to leverage real-time data to measure and optimize intervention effectiveness.

  • Coordinate activities through sustained leadership for Divisional assessment/research, accreditation and program review to support a culture of evidence and continuous quality improvement. Provide leadership for a Divisional plan for learning outcome assessment with key areas of student development, engagement, community of care initiatives, track national measures related to student engagement, retention, leadership and university accreditation. Build learning outcome and assessment capacity at the department level through education, training and support.

  • Develop, analyze, and generate reports containing descriptive analytical and evaluative content, and interpret results for Divisional operations and university accreditation efforts

  • Work with the Directors of Assessment, Institutional Research and Decision Support Environment in developing, conducting and archiving utilization, assessment and research data for the Division of Student Affairs. Coordinate Student Affairs' use of shared data among University constituencies.

  • Oversee the creation and maintenance of data visualizations, including all Student Affairs Tableau dashboards, with the goal of uncovering relationships between data through exploratory data analysis and presenting meaningful interactive reports to non-technical persons, including both internal and external audiences.

  • Provide leadership for the Student Affairs Research and Assessment Committee (SARAC) and represent Student Affairs on the University Executive Assessment Committee. Serve on other Division and University assessment and research committees, as required.

  • Work with the Associate Director of Survey Research to manage University's student survey calendar and steward best practices in survey research across all internal and external stakeholders seeking to utilize surveys for research and assessment. Oversee the Division's participation in internal and external surveys and research assessments including analyzing results and communication with specific stakeholders.

  • Lead the administration of ORNT 1000/2000 course evaluation forms and distribution of reports. Coordinate and maintain course evaluation data, including querying data sources, cleaning and preparing data files.

  • Assist in the creation and implementation of a program review for Divisional units on a regular interval that includes internal and external reviews of each unit's structure, programs, services and alignments to best serve the LMU student experience.

  • Supervise graduate research assistants and student employees performing assessment or research related duties for the Division of Student Affairs.

  • Manage annual reporting agenda and author subsequent internal and external reports.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requisite Qualifications

  • Typically a Master's degree in a specialization involving social sciences, higher education social or educational research, statistics, psychology, sociology or related field. Ph.D. preferred. Incumbent will be expected to continue upgrading knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to keep abreast of regulation/policy changes.

  • Minimum 3 years of research experience that demonstrate the ability to conduct complex analysis and learning outcome assessment

  • Demonstrated knowledge in the areas of program evaluation and assessment, quantitative and qualitative research methods, assessment, research design and development, database management, and statistical analysis. Experience data mining and utilizing analysis tools, ability to organize and manage workflow of simultaneous tasks and projects to meet deadlines.

  • Excellent verbal, presentation and written communication skills.

  • Experience utilizing reporting software such as Microsoft Excel, SPSS, and STATA. Experience with database design, development and maintenance. Experience with Banner preferred.

  • Experience with learning outcome assessment and student satisfaction methodologies.

  • Experience in higher education research preferred

  • Highly developed organizational and leadership skills.

  • Previous supervisory experience preferred.
