Departmental Overview

The Basic Needs Center acts as a virtual and physical hub that provides and connects students to essential services that impact health, belonging, and overall well-being. The Basic Needs Center team is committed to fostering belonging and justice on the UC Berkeley campus through a robust model that includes both short-term emergency relief and long-term support services addressing students' basic needs. We define basic needs as an ecosystem that at the core includes food security, housing security, and financial stability. We recognize that basic needs must be approached in a holistic manner, and may include health/medical care, technology, and transportation needs in addition to our core ecosystem.

The Basic Needs Housing Coordinator acts as the lead on the Basic Needs Center Care Team providing direct student support for unhoused students and students experiencing housing insecurity. The Coordinator will provide strategic and project management support around the Basic Needs Center's housing security services. The Coordinator will work closely with career and student staff, as well as stakeholders on and off campus who are content experts on housing and housing security. The Coordinator will provide strategic coordination and support for the Basic Needs Center service delivery model for housing security programs and services. The Coordinator will be involved in campus and systemwide advocacy efforts and will be the primary point of contact for the UC Berkeley campus in the areas of housing security and housing justice.

Responsibilities
  • Independently resolves the most complex individual cases regarding student housing security concerns including unhoused students and students who have complex emergency housing challenges.
  • Provides individual wraparound case management to students connecting them to on and off campus resources and services.
  • Provides strategic planning for the development of the Basic Needs Center's housing programs including emergency housing and vehicular housing programs.
  • Applies campus and system-wide basic needs research to inform, improve and/or expand on Basic Needs Center service delivery model for housing programs & services.
  • Leads efforts to expand Basic Needs focus areas in conjunction with the UC Basic Needs Systemwide efforts.
  • Acts as the primary point of contact for campus staff & faculty around all students experiencing basic needs-related challenges.
  • Provides consultations and training to the campus community around best practices in serving students and addressing their basic needs.
  • Develops partnerships with on and off campus housing providers to strengthen relationships and programming.
  • Project manages and operationalizes program and service delivery model recommendations related to housing security services the Basic Needs Center and Basic Needs Committee.
  • Supervises student staff including student caseworkers, interns and housing team student staff.
  • Assists with campus advocacy efforts for housing services through the Basic Needs Center.
  • Acts as the primary point of contact for the UC Berkeley campus for Care and Housing services in the UC Systemwide Basic Needs efforts.

Required Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • Advanced knowledge of Student Affairs / Student Life specialization.
  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
  • Advanced abilities in project management, problem identification and reasoning skills.
  • Advanced ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
  • Knowledge of the structures and systems that disproportionately impact individuals from marginalized or
    low-resource communities

Education/Training:
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge of and/or ability to quickly learn common University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of and/or ability to learn University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
  • Previous work experience in serving unhoused individuals or community members
  • Knowledge of crisis management/prevention interventions
  • Master's degree and/or equivalent experience/training preferred.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.



The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $67,000.00 - $80,000.00.
  • This is a two-year, full-time (40 hours/week), Contract position, and eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This is an exempt, monthly paid position. The annual salary is commensurate with experience.
  • This is a remote-friendly position, eligible for 20% remote capability.
