Director of Neighborhood Life, Office of Community Life - Office of Community Engagement Georgetown University

Located in a historic neighborhood in the nation's capital, Georgetown offers rigorous academic programs, a global perspective, exciting ways to take advantage of Washington, D.C., and a commitment to social justice. Our community is a tight knit group of remarkable individuals interested in intellectual inquiry and making a difference in the world.

Requirements

Director of Neighborhood Life, Office of Neighborhood Life, Office of Government Relations and Community Engagement – Georgetown University

As part of Georgetown's Office of Government Relations and Community Engagement, the Office of Neighborhood Life supports students and neighbors living in the communities surrounding Georgetown University. The office educates students about university policies, local ordinances, and how to be a good neighbor; builds and strengthens neighborhood relations by facilitating communication and dialogue; responds to concerns and issues as they arise; and promotes the quality of life for everyone living in our shared community.

Job Overview

The Director of Neighborhood Life is responsible for ensuring strong and positive relationships between the university, neighbors, and Georgetown students living off campus in the neighborhoods surrounding campus. This person – directly, through her or his staff, and in partnership with the Georgetown Community Partnership (https://communityengagement.georgetown.edu/gcp/) – will educate and support students living off campus to help them be good neighbors.

Responsibilities include:

  • implementing a robust student education, support, and accountability program,
  • ensuring a prompt response to off campus concerns of neighbors and students in accordance with the University’s 100% Response Policy (to Help Line calls),
  • developing initiatives to build relationships and goodwill with and between neighbors and students living off campus,
  • and being an active member of the Georgetown Community Partnership.

While directly responsible for dealing with neighbors, sensitivities and problems will inevitably arise. As such, the Director will be empowered and accountable to engage other university offices to address issues of concern.

Additional responsibilities include helping to manage overall university-wide Campus Plan compliance including but not limited to tracking and reporting data related to off campus student noise and trash problems, off campus student addresses of all university students including undergraduates and graduate students, and compliance of off campus student properties with DC government licensing and inspection requirements.

Work Interactions

The Director of Neighborhood Life will report to and work closely with the Vice President for Government Relations and Community Engagement (GRACE). As a member of the GRACE team, the Director will work closely with others members of the team and especially with the Associate Vice President for Local Government Affairs and Community Engagement on issues that require DC government action and support. In addition, because of the cross-cutting and interdepartmental nature of the incidents falling under the position’s purview, as needed the Director will also work closely with the offices of Student Affairs, Student Conduct, Residential Living, Communications, University Counsel, Public Safety/Georgetown University Police Department, Registrar, Assessment and Decision Support, University Information Services, Athletics, and Facilities Management.

The Director will work closely with neighbors, including members of ANC 2E, ANC 3D, and the Georgetown Community Partnership, to understand and address their concerns. The Director will work with student liaisons and representatives of various student groups to act as a conduit between the university, neighbors, and students living off campus.

The Director, in partnership with the ONL Assistant Director, will manage the Student Neighborhood Assistance Program (SNAP). Outside of normal business hours, SNAP responds to neighbor and student off campus concerns and, where appropriate, supports the referral of cases to Student Conduct for adjudication.

Qualifications

Successful applicants will, at a minimum, have:

  • B.A. with an M.A. preferred
  • 3-5 years of practical and related experience in student affairs and/or community relations or engagement
  • Basic tech and data analytic skills, including comfort with Excel and databases

Work Mode: On Campus. Please note that work mode designations are regularly reviewed in order to meet the evolving needs of the University. Such review may necessitate a change to a position’s mode of work designation. Complete details about Georgetown University’s mode of work designations for staff and AAP positions can be found at Mode of Work Designation.
