The Director of SEA will represent the Division on issues related to student activities, student government, and student crises by coordinating with campus administration and by serving on various university committees. The Director recruits, supervises, and evaluates a team of professional and student staff, as well as creates educational opportunities for student involvement and leadership development. The Director develops, makes recommendations, oversees, and monitors a variety of budgets and budget types. The position also develops, maintains, and collaborates with a strong network of campus partners (campus leaders, faculty, staff, and students) to implement engaging co-curricular programs for students.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Student Engagement & Curricular Implementation
• Provide vision for a program of high-impact learning environments that facilitate student leadership and equitable access to leadership development and increase co-curricular learning opportunities for all students using the curricular approach . • Develop short-term and long-term strategic goals for Student Engagement & Activities; ensure strategic goals align with and support the strategic direction for the Division of Enrollment Management & Student Affairs and the student engagement model on campus . • Develop, assess, and revise learning outcomes for students served by the Student Engagement & Activities programs, including student employees, volunteers and students at large. Develop evaluation methods and program assessments as appropriate and implement through an intersectional, equity-based lens. • Develop and implement campus-wide co-curricular strategies and initiatives that promote student leadership, student voice, social justice, community building, and sense of belonging. • Stay informed of and adopt current, evidence-based best practices for student activities, leadership development, and equity and inclusion work; educate professional and student staff for implementation. Connect the work of Student Engagement & Activities with regional and national conversations about higher education.
Operational management
• Manage and directly support the overall operations of and planning for Student Engagement & Activities, including implementation of the curricular approach, determination of program and service priorities that are responsive to student and campus needs, development of strategic plans, implementation of those plans, and ongoing management for continued performance and increasingly equitable outcomes. • Consistently monitors, analyzes and evaluates current scope of services offered in order to plan, implement and direct new programs; initiate improvements as needed. • Provide general oversight of Student Engagement & Activities programs including campus events, clubs, leadership programs, student media, student government, social justice programs, and facilities including the ARC Involvement & Leadership Office. • Maintain consistent communication with Assistant Dean for Student Engagement and campus partners in order to increase effectiveness of campus efforts to support student programs and activities. • Lead department’s risk management preparation and planning to ensure that the Student Engagement and Activities program is prepared for small and large-scale emergencies. Provide timely responses rooted in critical thinking, equity, and care to issues and crises. • Prepare manuals, reports, proposals, and other documents to further Student Engagement & Activities goals and maintain institutional records utilizing SharePoint. • Coordinate and participate in 24/7 on call emergency duty rotation for the Activities and Recreation Center. Respond to crises via phone or in-person as required.
Supervision
• Oversee department of 4.5-5.0 FTE of other staff, including direct supervision of two Assistant Directors (who in turn supervise three Program Managers) and lead team in working effectively with each other, colleagues, and students. • Recruit, train, and evaluate professional and student staff. Ensure that professional staff and students are aware of university policies and best practices regarding recruitment and hiring. • Apply and share knowledge of student affairs resources, assessments, and strategies in leadership, conflict management, group decision making, and leadership transition in the recruitment, training, advising, and supervision of student staff and leaders. • Plan, facilitate, and schedule staff meetings
Fiscal Management
• Maintain internal controls and compliance with University policies and procedures and with local, state, and federal regulations to ensure that budgets are spent within allocations and in a fiscally responsible way. • Ensure professional and student staff are trained on rationale behind regulations and compliance with them. • Oversee purchasing, preparation of contracts, reconciliation, and decisions related to 12+ student fee-based budgets supporting Student Engagement & Activities operations and programs. • Lead team in creating, drafting and presenting annual departmental funding requests to the Student Activities Fee Council. Coordinate budget with division and campus efforts. • Complete all necessary approvals and reconciliation in compliance with University policies.
Campus Partnerships
• Work closely with Residential Life, Diversity Center, Activities & Recreation Center, Services & Activities Fee Committee, Cascadia College Student Life and other departments to conceive, develop, and execute initiatives, programs, and additional learning opportunities for students. • Provide guidance through monthly meetings, at minimum, to ASUWB President on Enrollment Management Student Affairs division/University policy • Serve as a liaison between UW Bothell, the UW Seattle, UW Tacoma, and Cascadia College in regard to areas related to Student Engagement & Activities department, including student activities, student concerns, procurement, and risk management. • Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with offices on campus, including Residential Life, Fiscal & Audit Services, Campus Events and Conference Services, Information Technologies, Student Conduct, Procurement, the CARE Team, and others to promote student success and retention while advocating for equity and social justice. • Collaborate effectively with faculty and staff in academic units to create and maintain high-impact learning practices and co-curricular educational experiences, including student media programs, for students. Partner with other units in furtherance of these goals. • Serve as a member of the Activities and Recreation Center Operations Committee, as an ex-officio member of the Student Facility Advisory Committee/ARC Advisory Committee, and on other groups or committees as necessary to represent the needs of the department and of students at large. • Serve as resource for members of Student Affairs Leadership Team, Dean, and Assistant Dean on areas of expertise including student activities law and policy. • Provide consultation to other units within the division on applicable federal, state, and university policies, and procedures regarding expenditures of funds, procurement, contracts, and risk management.
Other duties as assigned
• Respond to requests for information and address concerns raised by students. • Staff major events and programs, including campus events, such as welcome week, graduation, convocation, housing move in, orientation, etc. • Serve and participate on university committees as assigned or designated. • Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean of Student Engagement.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
•Masters required and 3+ years of experience in a Higher education and/or student affairs.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
•Demonstrated experience supervising of professional and student paraprofessional staff required. •Demonstrated experience working with minoritized communities with a focus in diversity, equity and social justice. •Public speaking and strong communications experience. •Strategic oversight and program direction. •Experience overseeing administrative aspects of a department such as: service delivery, programming, strategic planning, budget authority, office management and records retention. •Well-developed skills in listening to and responding to people from diverse backgrounds across the institutional spectrum that includes students, faculty, administration, staff and community partners. •Substantive demonstrated experience in risk management as managing complex budgets.
DESIRED:
•Experience developing and implementing the curricular approach or similar plan for learning. •Experience with assessment tools and using data to guide program. •Creating and implementing policy. •Familiarity with student engagement software platforms.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
•The director is expected to attend major student activities and events held on campus and in the local community. •The director has regular and frequent contact with students engaged in a variety of clubs and organizations (including committees and boards) as well as frequent contact with faculty, staff, and administrators. •A work schedule that fluctuates due to after-hours and weekend activities, meetings, and events is common. •The position participates in 24/7 on-call emergency response rotation and serves as a university conduct office
