Overview
FUNCTION OF THE UNIT

SDSU Imperial Valley is a campus/college of San Diego State University serving the desert area of southeastern California. It is accredited as an integral unit of SDSU and operates under the same governance structure and university policies. Established in 1959 by an act of the State Legislature, SDSU IV offers its programs at two locations in Imperial County: Calexico and Brawley. Offering four year and two-year undergraduate degrees, graduate degrees, and post baccalaureate credential programs, SDSU Imperial Valley helps matriculated students achieve their higher education goals. Currently, SDSU IV employs 61 full-time faculty and staff members.
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The Outreach Coordinator is responsible for the recruitment of Hispanic/Latinx, low-income, college students; identification of, or design and implementation of enrichment activities; recruitment of faculty and students for mentorship component; coordination of internship and applied experience opportunities; provision of outplacement services for participants; and development of partnerships with industry'


Responsibilities
Freshmen Outreach and Recruitment

Under the direct supervision of the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, and in close coordination with SDSU-IVs Outreach and Recruitment Coordinator, the Outreach Specialist will:

  • Conduct year-round outreach activities to promote SDSU-IV freshmen program and recruit prospective students in High Schools located in the Imperial Valley region. These outreach activities shall include (but will not be limited to) classroom presentations; presentations to counselors, principals and other appropriate groups, tabling at school sites, at appropriate events (such as Higher Education Week, parents nights), and at college/career fairs at the local high schools and the regional community colleges, to increase application rate.
  • Conduct recruitment and outreach activities for the new Nursing, Public Health and STEM programs offered at SDSU-IV, among members of the Hispanic/Latinx communities, low-income students, and among traditionally underserved student populations in the Imperial Valley region.
  • In coordination with Student Affairs, generate reports that identify SDSU-IV students who dropped out during the COVID-19 pandemic and did not re-enroll for 2 consecutive semesters. Conduct targeted outreach efforts aimed at re-enrolling them to SDSU-IV.
  • Develop collaborative working relationships with local high school counselors, to ensure that they are aware of all relevant SDSU-IV campus information, such as deadlines, program offerings, workshops, etc. Shall assist prospective students in the development of their individual educational plans and goals at SDSU-IV. Shall assist in the articulation process which assures smooth transition of high school students into SDSU-IV
  • Ensure prospective students-whether advised at the local high schools or on campus-understand all the necessary requirements to be admitted in any of the Nursing, Public Health or STEM programs offered at SDSU-IV. These duties include providing general information and appropriate referrals to students with regards to all campus programs and services, including, but not limited to, university admission requirements, testing information, financial aid, scholarships, study abroad opportunities, student health services, EOP, and tutoring services.
  • In collaboration with the Outreach and Recruitment Coordinator, develop, implement, and participate in admission application workshops (and any other related workshops) that will assist students in completing all the requisite steps for a successful transition from the high school to SDSU-IV. These duties shall be undertaken at the local high schools and on the SDSU-IV campus.


Recruitment Events Coordination

  • In coordination with the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs and the Outreach and Recruitment Coordinator, the Outreach Specialist will lead the planning and execution of the 'Discover SDSU-IV' event, particularly with activities aimed at increasing the number of applicants accepted to the Nursing, Public Health, Math and other STEM-related programs offered at SDSU-IV.
  • In coordination with the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs, the Outreach Specialist will lead the implementation of a full day SDSU-IV Aztecs Leadership Institute. Activities will include (but not be limited to) developing the curriculum, facilitating the institute, and recruiting students.
  • Under the supervision of the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and in coordination with the faculty in charge of the project, the Outreach specialist will assist in the implementation of the NSF funded program 'Improving Undergraduate STEM Education: Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI Program)'
  • In coordination with the Retention Specialist and EOP, and under the direction of the Dean of Student Affairs will plan and implement the Summer Bridge Program at SDSU-IV.
  • Leading the efforts to planning and implementing SDSU-IV Neighborhood Aztecs program.
  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications
Core Knowledge and Abilities
  • The applicant must have extensive experience in outreach and recruitment activities, experience planning and conducting workshop or information sessions, excellent communication skills and a strong commitment to serving and working with low-income, first-generation, and Hispanic/Latinx students.
  • Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of the program to which assigned; general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management; general knowledge of research and interview techniques; and general knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior.
  • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; ability to obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; ability to reason logically; ability to collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data; ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required; ability to recognize multicultural, multisexed and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly; ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and ability to rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned.
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications regarding other program or service areas.
  • Possession of these knowledge and abilities is demonstrated through the experience requirements.


Minimum Education
  • Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Health Care, or a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) related field.

Preferred Qualifications and Special Skills
  • Background in STEM, healthcare, physical or behavioral sciences.
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish)
  • A master's degree in higher education, public administration, student services, or a STEM discipline.
