Salary Range: $58,000-$70,000 annual (dependent on experience)
The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
Position Summary
Founded in 2012, the Data Science Institute at Columbia University is singularly focused on advancing the state of the art in data science with the goal of transforming all fields, professions and sectors the application of data science, and to ensure the responsible use of data to benefit society. The Data Science Institute trains the next generation of data scientists, develops innovative technology, fosters collaborations in advancing techniques to interpret data and address pressing societal problems, and works closely with industry to bring promising ideas to market.
Reporting to the Institute???s Assistant Director of Career Development and Alumni Services, the Student Affairs Officer will serve as an integral liaison to graduate students and alumni in the Data Science Institute. The Student Affairs Officer will also be expected to support the planning and administration of graduate student affairs operations, policies, procedures, and career development activities. The incumbent will serve as a member of the Data Science Institute's staff for Academic Programs and assist the support of the Data Science graduate students, as well as the coordination of a number of Institute???s signature academic and career-related programs.
Responsibilities
Student Affairs Operations and Activities
Support and execute graduate student programming designed to address the academic, social, and professional needs of graduate students, and a growing body of Data Science alumni;
Assist with annual events, including but not limited to: orientation, semester-end receptions, graduation receptions, study breaks, capstone course presentations and reception, etc;
Aid in the development, design and analysis of graduate student related surveys, assist in the analysis of results;
Assist and support the advancement of MSDS Alumni programming activities;
Support the Assistant Director of Admissions and Academic Affairs and the MSDS Program Director and answer questions, often of a complex nature, about registration and courses.
Student Career Development activities, including but not limited to:
Contribute to content creation and acts as the lead on organizing the publication of weekly career newsletters to be distributed to MSDS student and alumni;
Support the Assistant Director of Career Development and Alumni Relations with current and prospective employers and respond to related inquiries;
Aid in the development and execution of career related events (i.e. fairs, info sessions, mock technical interviewing sessions ) and resources; support the DS students with Vmock career tool.
Assist with related student/alumni/employer career record keeping, (i.e. fieldwork/curricular practical training, etc.), and graduation survey to capture student mobility upon program completion;
Provide administrative support to the Institute???s signature programs, as needed, to include but not limited to, Campus Connections program, DSI Scholars program, Capstone projects.
Subject to business needs, we may support hybrid work arrangements through at least Spring 2023. Options will be discussed during the interview process.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor???s degree and up to two years related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience required;
excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills;
computer skills required (proficiency with Google Office Suite, basic experience with automating processes using online applications);
must be a team player, self-starter, and must be willing to work on occasional evenings and weekends.
Ideal candidate will be well-versed in developing and executing small and large scale events and programs.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience working with graduate and/or international students is preferred.
