Reporting to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and working in close partnership with the Academic Affairs Academic Program Coordinator, the Director of Advising facilitates student academic success, retention, and degree completion through advising, management of enrollments, programs, resource development and connection, maintenance of student degree audit records, and collaboration with on and off-campus partners. The position acts as primary advisor to all undergraduate, Master of Music, and Graduate Performance Diploma students, approximately 750 students. This position upholds, interprets and communicates to students the Peabody Institutes academic policies and processes while maintaining confidentiality and adhering to FERPA.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Advising (60%)

  • Develop and implement advising plan and learning outcomes for student cohorts in alignment with University and Peabody missions. Identify and new strategies that align with best practices and develop assessment metrics and tools to measure success of advising.
  • Assist students in reflecting upon and navigating their academic experiences through proactive counseling on academic planning, goals, program requirements and curriculum, course selection, problem-solving, success strategies, and connection to resources.
  • Create programs to onboard new students, with a focus on needs of first-year undergraduates and their transitions to college academics and planning.
  • Conduct individual advising sessions via phone, virtually, or in-person meetings. Maintain significant email correspondence with students. Coach students through the petition and appeals process and other processes and requests.
  • Conduct group advising sessions, advising workshops, and/or co-sponsor events with student-facing departments and faculty.
  • Develop and maintain advising resources that advance student degree completion.
  • Provide tools and counseling for students on academic probation to develop academic success plans.
  • Advise students on registration, course selection, programs, and academic opportunities. Troubleshoot registration problems.
  • Partner with Homewood undergraduate advising offices for students in Dual Degree Program.
  • Provide early interventions and case management for at-risk students identified by faculty or other student-facing departments.
  • Contribute to clearance of students for graduation.
  • Oversee Peer Advising program.


Student Records (15%)

  • Maintain notes on student meetings and oversee storage of pertinent documents in OnBase.
  • Maintain accurate records within and utilize Degree Audit; track student progress by running reports and analyzing student data.
  • Complete initial evaluation of, and partner with faculty and Registrars Office on, transfer credit.
  • Act as member of University-wide working groups on development of improved advising technology software and systems, including OnBase Working Group, Advisor Self-Service Working Group, Degree Audit Working Group.
  • Approve registrations for Dual Degree students.
  • Manage student's minimum and maximum semester credits limits.


Supervision (10%)

  • Manage the Academic Affairs/Advising Academic Program Coordinator.


Collaboration (10%)

  • Partner closely with Academic Affairs and Student Affairs to monitor and address individual student issues. Act as a member of Students of Concern Committee and Academic Petition Review Committee.
  • Develop and participate in student programs and events, such as Orientation, with other Peabody departments.
  • Collaborate with Homewood undergraduate advising offices for Dual Degree Advising.
  • Work closely with faculty to monitor students progress.
  • Member of SSEI/SSO, EAA, Study Abroad, DEI Training & Development, OnBase, Advisor Self-Service, Degree Audit university-wide committees/working groups.
  • Member of Baltimore Student Exchange Working Group.


Miscellaneous (5%)

  • Advise applicants to the Conservatory as needed.
  • Participate in annual revision of the Academic Catalogue.
  • Pursue ongoing professional development.


Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent computer skills with sound knowledge of MS Office Suite and database management.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of and interest in classical music.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree.
  • Three year's experience.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree in music or comparable professional experience is strongly preferred for this position.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
