The UW Runstad Department of Real Estate in the College of Built Environments has an outstanding opportunity for an Academic/Career Adviser. The Department, established in 2017, focuses on preparing real estate professionals to develop, finance and manage housing, retail, and commercial spaces. The Department offers a well-established Masters of Science in Real Estate (MSRE), which serves approximately 50 students and two Graduate Certificates (one in Real Estate, the other in Housing Studies). It also offers a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) program with a major in Real Estate. Launched in early 2021, the program currently serves approximately 200 students along with a Minor in Real Estate, which was launched in 2018 and currently serves approximately 100 students.

The Academic Advising component of the position will focus on advising the graduate students including: MSRE students, certificate students, and those in concurrent graduate degree programs. The Career Advisor component of the position will provide programmatic and administrative support to all Real Estate programs and offers career services to all students (undergraduate/graduate) and serves as the alumni relations representative of the department as well as the recordkeeper for the professional careers of Department alumni. The Advisor reports to the Department Chair and works closely with the Assistant to the Chair, the undergraduate Academic Advisor, the Program Directors, other Advisors in the College of Built Environments, the College’s Student Services and Advancement offices, the Department’s Advisory Board, as well as the industry and alumni. The adviser participates in select college and Runstad Advisory Board committees.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Graduate Student Academic Advising

  • Meet and advise prospective students on graduate Real Estate programs, including admission processes, program requirements, application deadlines, and funding opportunities
  • Manage the admission process for graduate programs       in coordination with the admission committee
  • Provide one-on-one meetings with current students to assist in the selection of courses, course sequencing, and programmatic activities
  • Answer inquiries by email, phone, online, or in person
  • Lead monthly information sessions for the Master of Science in Real Estate
  • Provide regular drop-in advising hours
  • Advise students who experience academic hardships and make referrals to appropriate campus resources when necessary
  • Work with the Registrar’s Office and other units on campus to help students resolve problems appropriately
  • Manage communication with students, including through email and social media, and respond to student inquiries
  • Coordinate with other academic advisors within the College of Built Environments, with key program coordinators and other campus advisors, and with other campus units as necessary to provide holistic advising services
  • Assist with marketing of the program and student recruitment

    Career counseling/industry outreach for both undergraduate & graduate students

  • Work with the Program Directors, the Undergraduate Academic Adviser and Runstad Advisory Board Student Experience Committee to develop, recruit, and maintain a student mentoring program
  • Manage/monitor mentorship and internship experiences, troubleshoot conflicts, and intervene when necessary
  • Introduce students to various careers in the field of real estate through career events and one-on-one meetings
  • Support student-driven Real Estate Club events and serve as the department’s liaison to the Club
  • Build and maintain industry relationships
  • Review student resumes for real estate positions
  • Support students in their search for internships and permanent employment
  • Support the undergraduate and graduate Professional Development courses
  • Manage and distribute internships and job postings

    Industry events, alumni relations and record keeping for both undergraduate & graduate programs

  • Coordinate student-alumni-industry events in coordination with department administration
  • Develop and maintain a database with all undergraduate and graduate alumni’s contact information and manage LinkedIn group
  • Conduct salary and position surveys of graduates and alumni and prepare annual reports for the department
  • Serve as a liaison among students, alumni, Advisory Board, and industry

    REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Two or more year of experience working with university students
  • Experience with or interest in real estate industry
  • Passion for working with students in developing their professional paths
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience engaging with and serving diverse communities and individuals
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to move tables/chairs and preparing for events
