The Resident Director (RD) is a full-time, 12-month, live-in position with on-call responsibilities. Under the general supervision of an Assistant Director, the RD utilizes a curricular approach and equity mindset as cornerstones of their daily work – each is a framework by which daily work is achieved. Primary responsibilities include:
Implementation of a curricular approach in the development and education of a residential community ranging from 600-1,800 residents.
The direct supervision, training, and evaluation of 1-2 full-time professional staff (Assistant Resident Directors), and up to 30 paraprofessional student staff.
Management of a student conduct and students of concern case load consisting of students living within their community.
After-hours crisis response and scheduled on-call responsibilities for a neighborhood of 5,000-6,000 residents and a campus community of 10,000-11,000 residents.
Developing effective working relationships with the 60+ colleagues that make up our R&CL staff.
Job Functions/Percentage of Time/Duties
25% Community Development & Education
Develops and implements a comprehensive and unique educational plan for their community that is in line with departmental goals surrounding residential education and the curricular approach.
Uses both educational and social initiatives to foster a deep sense of belonging amongst all residents, specifically amongst underrepresented student populations living in their community.
Effectively serves the unique needs of residents based on their social and academic identities.
Maintains a visible presence in the community.
Supervises and oversees the community development efforts of the Resident Assistant staff, ensuring both a strong sense of community within each RA jurisdiction and the community as a whole.
20% Supervision of Staff
Serves as direct supervisor to 1-2 Assistant Resident Directors.
Responsible for the daily supervision of 8-17 Resident Assistants, as well as the community’s Desk Attendant staff. Shares supervisory responsibilities with Assistant Resident Director(s) as appropriate.
Facilitates and participates in the training of staff, both during the pre-Fall training periods and on-going, as needed.
Evaluates ARD(s) and RAs annually, highlighting successes and providing meaningful and actionable feedback for improvement where appropriate.
30% Student Conduct & Counseling
Using a curricular approach, is primarily responsible and works collaboratively with Conduct Officers and ARD(s) to ensure all conduct cases involving residents from their community are adjudicated in adherence to departmental sanctioning standards and in a timely manner.
Meets with residents who are in distress. Works with students to either help resolve their problems and/or connects them with campus and community resources as needed.
Coordinates with Student Conduct, campus Social Workers, AD, and other staff as needed to provide effective support for students of concern.
5% Community Safety
Is a member of an on-call team that provides on-call support to residents and campus every day of the year, including during campus breaks, holidays, and closures.
Serves as a First Responder to community and campus crises. Provides support to campus authorities as appropriate.
Supports campus efforts during special events (e.g. Halloween, Deltopia) to provide enhanced security measures within the community.
Responsible for ensuring that the community has adequate staffing and duty coverage while residents are living in the community.
20% Departmental Support
Responsible for the daily operations of their community in supporting the needs of their residents.
Participates in the recruitment of student and professional staff.
Participates, as assigned, to support an array of different projects.
Communicates and collaborates with HDAE partners (i.e. Residential Operations, Campus Dining, etc.) on a regular basis to support the daily operation of the community.
Communicates on a regular basis with their Assistant Director to strategize around and address an array of issues impacting the daily operation of the community.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in related area required.
Master's degree or equivalent working experience in Residential Life, Housing, or Student Affairs.
Preferred Qualifications
1-3 years 2+ years post MA degree experience.
1-3 years experience in counseling and student advising.
1-3 years experience effectively managing the day-to-day operations of a student housing community.
1-3 years previous student staff supervision.
Track record of infusing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion principles into daily work.
Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues throughout a large, multifunctional department.
Commitment to creating communities where residents feel a deep sense of belonging.
Knowledge of and/or experience working within a residential curriculum campus.
