Job Description:


Reporting to the Associate Director of Residence Life and Housing, the Area Coordinator (AC) lives and works in the student residential environment. The AC is responsible for providing a living-learning environment which offers opportunities for individual and group development congruent with the mission of the College. The AC is responsible for the implementation of the Residential Curriculum, the primary educational focus of the department. ACs also serve in an on call rotation, responding to incidents of crisis that occur after hours and on weekends at the College. In this role, they work closely with the Department of Public Safety and the Office of Student Integrity & Community Standards.

This position is responsible for managing residential facilities, which includes occupancy, resident satisfaction, safety, and educational opportunities. This management can include maintaining spaces that are conducive to studying, providing basic mediation and counseling services, and providing referrals to other offices at the College. The AC will focus on customer service, care and the promotion community through their interactions and supervision of their student staff members and residents. All ACs also participate in the administrative functions and efforts of Residence Life and Housing. As the supervisor of the living areas, the AC will coordinate with other staff members in the RL&H office as well as in other offices on programs and events where their residents are the primary focus. ACs participate in the on duty rotation supported by the Deans on Duty rotation.

Major Areas of Responsibility

The principle functions of the Area Coordinator position are to:

  • 40% Train, supervise and evaluate Resident Assistants (RAs) and Head Resident Assistants (HRAs). Conduct weekly group staff meetings and meet with individual RAs at least 3 to 4 times a semester. Monitor and ensure that staff adequately completes all RA responsibilities including the implementation of the Residential Curriculum, attendance at meetings and general availability to students. Ensure that HRAs are completing their responsibilities in the areas they supervise.

  • 15% Provide living-learning environment offering opportunities for group and individual development congruent with the mission of the College through daily interaction with students. Afford life-lesson educational experiences in living cooperatively with others, developing and clarifying values, developing appreciation for new ideas, cultural and lifestyle differences and developing independence. Plan and facilitate, through HRAs and RAs, programs which meet the developmental needs of students

  • 10% Provide training, management and services that enable the orderly and effective administration of the residence halls. Ensure that students are familiar with services, facilities, staff members and functions. Educate them on safety, security and emergency procedures. Disseminate explanations of institutional and residential community policies, procedures and expectations as well as elucidation of confrontational and inappropriate behavior. Explain access to appropriate resources for personal, academic or social difficulties

  • 5% Manage and supervise residential facilities in a manner ensuring that they are clean, safe, well maintained and conducive to study. Arrange for the timely repair of equipment and building systems. Ensure the completion of regularly scheduled cleaning and maintenance. Determine responsibility and assess charges to individuals or communities that vandalized the facilities

  • 10% Participate in the administrative functions of the Residence Life Office. Serve as on-duty person for the entire campus to respond to crisis situations or other problematic event. Represent the office on various Residence Life committees, advise student organizations and serve as judicial conference administrator.

  • 20% Participate in office-wide student conduct adjudication. Act as primary student conduct officer for cases which occur in the AC's area. Take on additional conduct cases as needed to balance the work load of other staff. Serve as a CHOICES facilitator.

  • Represent the College with the highest degree of professionalism to both internal and external audiences.

  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks and participating in professional societies.

  • Motivate and challenge the paraprofessional staff

  • Promote awareness inclusion and appreciation of cultural and lifestyle differences

  • Establish and maintain professional identity and contacts within the College

  • Confront negative behavior and maintain community standards

  • Recruit engaged and passionate student staff

  • Build community in the buildings that they supervise

  • Provide a level of care and customer support to the residential students

  • Perform other duties as assigned.



Requirements:


  • Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree in higher education/student affairs or equivalent is preferred.

  • Leadership experience in residential life as a professional for one year or graduate experience supervising RAs for 2 years is preferred. This person should be self-directed, organized and enjoy working with students.

  • Must have an understanding of values and expectations of a highly selective, private Jesuit liberal arts college.

  • Demonstrate intercultural, diversity and inclusion competencies and a commitment to working with diverse populations.

  • Desire to work in a fast-paced; diverse and vibrant global institution is essential.

  • Must be able to work collaboratively and be able to make sound decisions independently.

  • Technical Skills - Display proficiency using standard office equipment such as a computer, fax, photocopier, scanner, etc.

  • Proficient in all Microsoft suite applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

  • PeopleSoft financial system experiences a plus.

  • Google suite, Canva, Basecamp, and Moodle experience preferred.
