Job Description:

The Assistant Director of the U-FLi Center plays a critical role in cultivating an inclusive and welcoming campus community with particular attention to the needs and concerns of undocumented, first-generation college, and low-income students.  Under the supervision of the U-FLi Center Director, the Assistant Director will be responsible for the development and execution of comprehensive programs that provide navigational, social, and academic support to all U-FLi students at Brown University. The Assistant Director provides leadership for the FLi Scholars Program by supporting the program manager with the first- and second-year experience components, ensuring consistency with the program curriculum and outcomes via assessment, and overseeing the development and coordination of the 3rd and 4th year FLiSP experience. The Assistant Director supervises the hourly student staffers, in addition to providing strengths-based student leadership development and student group advising. The position requires significant collaboration with other centers, academic departments, the College, and other units in the university that support the holistic success of all U-FLi students.

Job Qualifications 

Education and Experience

  • Required: Bachelorâ™s degree in related field; Masters degree is strongly preferred (e.g. Higher Education, American Studies, Ethnic Studies, Sociology)

  • Experience working with historically disenfranchised communities, particularly undocumented, low-income, and first-generation college students in an academic setting.

  • Prior experience in program management and execution.

  • Experience with program development and implementation.

  • Experience providing advisory and programmatic support to student organizations.

  • Experience with workshop/training development and facilitation.

  • Experience managing student staff and/or professional staff is required.

  • Demonstrated experience advising, supporting, mentoring, and/or advocating for students and student initiatives.

  • Project management skills and proven examples of sustainable successful event management. 

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of issues of social justice.

  • Demonstrated skill in facilitation, including an understanding of group dynamics and leadership development.

  • Knowledge of intersectional approaches to student success for undocumented, low-income, and first-generation college students

  • Demonstrated knowledge and expertise on issues impacting undocumented communities in the United States, with particular attention to higher education

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and social justice

  • Ability to develop and implement programs and initiatives

  • Knowledge and familiarity with Brownâ™s educational mission and overall student experience

  • Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive campus community.

  • Ability to take initiative and to offer creative solutions to problems.

  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.

  • Ability to collaborate and consult with multiple campus constituents, including but not limited to: senior-level administrators, faculty, undergraduates, graduate students, and alumni.

  • Effective organizational, administrative and time management skills.

  • Effective written and oral communication skills.

  • Flexibility to evolve with changing university and campus life needs, goals and policies.

  • Computer proficiency in word processing, data management, and spreadsheets. Graphic design skill is a plus.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including multiple nights and weekends as needed.

  • Conflict management skills are a plus.â‹
