DESCRIPTION

Reporting to the assistant vice chancellor of student retention and success, the director of the office of academic support and instructional services (OASIS) leads efforts to facilitate the success of low-income, first-generation, underrepresented, and other students who may be at higher risk of experiencing difficulty at UCSD. The director oversees individualized services, cohort-based programs, learning communities, and enrichment opportunities that include developing study plans, recognizing and addressing academic and non-academic barriers to academic success, and counseling or coaching on other life issues that impact academic progress and/or student retention. Additionally, the director is responsible for developing and proposing course curricula, readings, and classroom activities for academic courses that may be offered to OASIS students during the academic year, partnering with the education studies department to support these courses.

The director supervises five staff, indirectly manages an additional 15 staff, and leverages a budget of $3M to promote academic achievement and excellence through academic counseling, collaborative learning workshops, peer mentoring, and summer bridge programs for entering first-year and continuing students. OASIS maximizes a student's involvement and contributes significantly to students' retention, sense of community, and leadership skills through mentorship; academic support programs; one-to-one and small-group counseling; campus support referrals; social/cultural programming; and creating an environment that emphasizes collaboration, self-discovery, validation, equity, and community.

Promotes a climate of ethical leadership, respect, trust and fairness consistent with the UC San Diego Principles of Community and represents the interest of the department in the conduct of regular business. Serves as a role model for behavior that ensures principles of equity, diversity and inclusion are being upheld within the workplace. Builds capacity and facilitates shared responsibility for creating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive department in which each staff member can thrive. Seeks opportunities to collaborate with campus constituents to conceive and implement strategic initiatives that drive and develop diversity within the department.
