Job Duties:

The primary purpose of the Assistant Director of Organization Development is to provide training and advisement to registered student organizations and provide leadership development for student organization leaders. This position will aid in the holistic development of the ECU student by developing, planning, promoting, staffing, and assessing a wide range of diverse events/programs for the campus community. This position will also promote student learning objectives in all programs and services that are provided out of this unit within Student Involvement and Leadership.

This position will practice student development theory as it relates to their job responsibilities to promote the understanding of regional, state, national, and global issues. This position will also complete an ongoing assessment of programs and services offered. One of the responsibilities is to provide supervision and instructional guidance to the leaders of the various committees and organizations that fall under the supervision of the Department of Student Engagement to develop the student socially and academically by instilling in them a level of personal responsibility that will aid them both inside and outside the classroom.

This is a professional position with responsibilities associated with having a direct impact on the quality of the students' educational experiences and interaction with their peers as well as the campus community at large. Additionally, this position requires a strong knowledge of university budgetary practices, risk management, problem solving skills, and contract negotiation; thus independent decision making is necessary.

Student Organization Management & Officer Training (70%)
Advise designated committees of the Department of Student Engagement. The Assistant Director must have experience and skills in working with multicultural programming and major campus events planning.

Evaluate needs and implement plans as needed for student organizations on the Health Sciences campus to engage student leaders in those programs.

Create, implement, and report the results of annual assessment projects that examine the effectiveness, attractiveness, relevance, and impact of the programs offered.
Serve as a liaison to assigned fraternity and sorority chapters, ensuring compliance with departmental processes and university requirements.

Advise organizations within the Department of Student Engagement including Omicron Delta Kappa and Order of Omega as needed.

Review Fraternity and Sorority Life chapter progress towards completion of required standards.

Advise ECU students on university policies and procedures.


Leadership Training (15%)
Manage the facilitation, planning, and coordination of annual training, conferences, on demand learning, and other leadership development opportunities for the campus student leaders.

Assist with leadership and position training for organizations advised by the Department of Student Engagement including Fraternity and Sorority Life councils and chapters, Student Activities Board, and Homecoming Committee.

Provide individual and group counseling to help students achieve more effective social, personal and /or educational development.

Coordinate installation ceremonies each semester for Fraternity and Sorority Life council officers.


Departmental Administration (10%)
Oversee designated budgets in the Department of Student Engagement that are allocated funds from student activity fees each year.

Coordinate awards and recognition activities of the department and plan annual awards processes and ceremonies.

Attend weekly staff meetings of the Department of Student Engagement.


Supervision & Other Responsibilities (5%)
Supervise, hire, train, and evaluate one (1) graduate assistant,.

Teach an academic freshman seminar course.

Serve as the department's liaison to the Student Affairs Leadership Collaborative to ensure consistent implementation of divisional learning outcomes.

Provide individual and group counseling to help students achieve more effective social, personal and /or educational development.

Serve on various Divisional and University-wide committees.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education/Experience:

 Master's Degree required in College Student Personnel Administration, Higher Education or related field of study
 Minimum of three years of experience at the collegiate level in the area of program coordination, student activities and student organization advising
 Demonstrated experience in the following areas: entertainment contract negotiation and review; budget development and management; program planning and implementation; student advising; and student learning assessment
 Demonstrated experience building a co-operative co-curricular program focusing on individual awareness, social/global, and cultural issues and concerns
 Demonstrated knowledge of college union/student activity philosophy

Enhance the learning environment, facilitate retention, and optimize the student experience. Accommodate the diverse needs of all students. Support a community environment that is welcoming, safe, and secure. Assist students in meeting their basic needs for housing, nutrition, and physical and emotional well-being. Provide the means for students to become active participants and leaders in their own learning. Assist students in developing logical thought processes and sound decision-making skills. Assist students in developing an appreciation of the arts. Moreover, the division seeks to contribute to the development of the whole individual by fostering in each student a deeper appreciation of the importance of life-long learning, individual responsibility, and human diversity. Through collaboration, the division provides programs and services that are grounded in theory, assessment, and sound practice.

The Department of Student Engagement houses both Fraternity and Sorority Life and the Student Organization Center, providing advising, support, leadership development, and resources to over 35 fraternities and sororities and more than 300+ registered student organizations. The office also supports the Student Activities Board which provides weekly programming for the campus community, plans and executes the largest campus traditions, offers leadership development for Student Activities Board members, and much more.

The Department of Student Engagement is supported by the Student Involvement and Leadership (SIL) unit within East Carolina University's Division of Student Affairs. SIL enhances the educational experience for all students by helping to build a sense of campus community through a wide variety of programs and services for individuals and student groups. Through a broad range of co-curricular, cultural, educational, recreational, and social programs, SIL supports the university's commitments of student success, public service, and regional transformation. The unit is composed of five departments; Student Engagement, Intercultural Affairs, Campus Recreation and Wellness, Student Transitions, and Student Centers.
This position reports directly to the Senior Associate Director for Student Engagement and supervises one Graduate Assistant for Student Organization Leadership.
