The Career Development Counselor provides specialized, individual, and group career counseling in an effort to assist students to become informed about the choice of major, career options, educational endeavors and opportunities related to their personal and professional objectives.The Career Development Counselor reports to the Director, Career Development
Essential Job Functions:
Provide individual and group career counseling which may include administering and interpreting career assessments to help students make informed career and program of study decisions.
Maintain a general knowledge and understanding of the related professions represented by Davidson-Davie programs of study, maintaining familiarity with education, training, and career opportunities and employer expectations.
Coordinate, manage and deliver career exploration activities for new students online and in person on both the Davidson campus and the Davie campus as part of the new student onboarding process.
In conjunction with the Career Development staff, develop and execute campus programming activities, events and requests for classroom presentations that engage students in their educational experience relevant to career and job preparation and choices.
Provide individual and group career counseling, classroom workshops and campus activities to engage students on the Davie Campus.
Maintain sensitivity, understanding and respect for a diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff of varying social, economic, cultural, ideological, and ethnic backgrounds.
Use technology to provide all career services through virtual and online means. This includes using technology to create/update/adapt workshops, informational materials, recorded workshops and sessions, and services such as online job boards, career exploration websites and services.
Collaborate with the college’s recruiter to assist with career exploration activities for prospective college students and for high school students engaged in the Career and College Promise program.
Support Davidson-Davie’s high school Career Coaches and the overall Career Coach program to provide career development counseling and programming to assigned schools in Davidson and Davie counties.
Assist students in developing competencies related to job search methods; resume building, interview preparation, and workplace professionalism through individual career counseling and classroom presentations and activities.
Manage the college workstudy program in conjunction with the Financial Aid Office.
Conduct and use labor market resources to research and analyze current and future employment trends in various industries and share information with faculty, staff and students as needed.
Participate in monthly faculty meetings to enhance knowledge of the curriculum and professional field of study.
Manage social media pages including Facebook and Instagram to communicate department information and events.
Maintain detailed online career counseling notes and records.
Learn, understand, and refer students to appropriate campus and community services.
Have a working knowledge of college processes that could impact a student's career decision.
Participate in college committees and work groups as needed.
Participate in professional development activities both on and off campus.
Work occasional evenings and/or weekends.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Required:
Required:
Bachelors’ Degree from a regionally accredited institution
Minimum of two years’ experience in Career Development or related field
Preferred Qualifications:
Masters’ Degree from a regionally accredited institution
Experience in higher education
Experience in community college
Proficiency in a foreign language such as Spanish
Experience using various career exploration tools
Experience interpreting labor market information
Experience facilitating workshops and events
Demonstrated use of technology for marketing, teaching, and/or sharing of information
