Illinois Wesleyan University invites applications for the position of Director of Academic Advising. The Director cultivates an environment where students with varied backgrounds and diverse academic interests receive expert guidance on their individual academic journeys. The Director promotes the academic success of individual students through the coordination and implementation of reflective faculty advising, academic support initiatives, and university retention efforts. Responsibilities:
Coordination of reflective academic advising; promotes holistic, reflective advising practices that go beyond course selection and career readiness; directs faculty advising by creating and facilitating training, communicating regularly, and consulting about student concerns; recruits first-year and transfer faculty advisors; addresses general issues that affect academic performance; assists advisees with selection of and registration for courses; supports and encourages campus engagement; makes referrals to campus resources;
Outreach and support leading to student persistence; tracks, monitors, and meets with students who are experiencing concerns, have received low midterm grades, or are on academic probation; provides direct support to students needing assistance; creates and monitors academic performance contracts; develops, coordinates, and facilitates academic success initiatives.
New student orientation (in collaboration with Student Affairs): facilitates implementation of academic sessions and activities for orientation programs including academic advising and registration; recruits and trains faculty and staff advisors; assists with selection and training of student orientation staff.
Leadership/Supervision; participates as member of the Academic Affairs leadership team; serves as a member of the Student Success Team, Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress Review Committee, and Retention Committee; supervises Student Accessibility Services Staff and jointly supervises an Administrative Specialist.
Requirements:
A Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, vocational counseling, academic advising, or a related field with transferable skills or experience
Three to five years full time experience in academic advising and a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion
Strong written and verbal communication skills to address a diverse campus constituency
