We’re seeking candidates for the position of Area Director within the Office of Residence Life. The Area Director position is a live-in, full-time, 12-month administrative faculty appointment reporting to the Associate Director of Residence Life.

Essential Functions:

Earlham's Residence Life program is shaped by a view of housing facilities as learning environments with the understanding that the most important learning that occurs outside the classroom takes place between students. The residential program is designed to support strong community development and social awareness. The priority is developing meaningful and healthy relationships while providing opportunities for leadership and involvement as students explore the roles, responsibilities, and mutual influence of those intentional communities. Area Directors assist in creating opportunities for student learning in line with this philosophy.

The primary functions of this role include work within the following domains:

  • Community Development, Leadership, & Role-Modeling
  • Student Engagement & Programming
  • Student Staff Supervision & Development
  • Crisis Management & On-Call Response
  • Administrative & Operational Tasks
  • Student Conduct & Well-Being
  • Facilities Management
  • Additional Duties as Assigned

Area Directors assume responsibility for the overall operation and leadership of residential areas housing 100-300 students in the residence halls, college houses, and campus apartments. Area Directors lead efforts alongside student staff to build intentional communities that are culturally rich, socially robust, and inclusive. Area Directors supervise and develop multiple student staff, including undergraduate Hall Directors and Resident Assistants within their assigned area.

Because the position's primary functions include working with student leaders, programming, advising student groups, facilitating the student conduct process, and responding to emergencies after typical working hours, the position requires a high level of campus visibility with regular evening and weekend commitments.

Area Directors also complete quarter-time collateral assignments within one or more of the following areas:

  • Academic Support & Initiatives
  • Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
  • Student Activities & Leadership
  • Student Staff Search & Development

Required Experience & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 1-year experience working in Residence Life.
  • Understanding retention issues related to equity, inclusion, persistence, and wellness and a commitment to creating spaces where students feel safe, valued, and heard.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity in all forms, teamwork, and ethical student affairs practice.
  • Excellent communication skills, motivation, and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the role modeling expectations of a live-in staff member, healthy personal boundaries, and a desire to be a positive change agent in the lives of students.
  • Clear understanding of the role of residence life at a private residential liberal arts college, including the expectation to know students and a commitment to high visibility within campus housing and events.
  • Able to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Be a positive example and resource to all Earlham Students

Preferred Experience & Qualifications

  • Master's degree in student personnel, higher education, or related field and two years of full-time professional experience in residence life with collateral or generalist student affairs experience.
  • Experience working with HMS, Banner, and/or Maxient is preferred.
  • Fluency in a second language.
  • International immersion experiences (i.e., study aboard, volunteer service, etc.).
  • Experience advising student groups or themed residential communities.
  • Experience with assessment, risk-reduction or alcohol education, or student conduct.
