Commonwealth Academy is seeking to hire a Director of Studies. The Director of Studies, in conjunction with the Division Heads, superintends policies and practices that affect curriculum development and alignment, pedagogy, professional development, and faculty status (e.g., licensure). The Director of Studies is a member of the School’s Leadership Team who collaborates closely with Division Heads, Department Chairs, the Differentiation Specialist, and the Student Support Team. The position requires extensive collegial and collaborative relationships with administrators, faculty/staff, and students, as well as the ability to interact successfully with outside constituencies, such as associations and peers at other schools. The incumbent is expected to work well with students and their families when relevant and to collaborate with the Office of Admissions to contribute to the retention and success of students. The incumbent is expected to keep a high level of confidentiality and to represent the School in a positive manner.
Key Responsibilities
Serves as a member of the Leadership Team and participates in establishing and achieving academic institutional goals in accordance with the School’s strategic plan.
In partnership with the Division Heads, Dean of Student Life, and Department Chairs, leads the planning, evaluation, implementation, and assessment of academic and student programs.
Directs the development of short- and long-range plans for all academic and student affairs functions.
Gathers and interprets data to determine the programmatic needs of the community and advises the Head of School and management staff on new programs and facilities that would the School better serve its students.
Conducts, in cooperation with professional staff, evaluative studies of curricula and student affairs programs; recommends action based on the outcome of such assessment; and monitors the effectiveness of such actions.
Recommends the revision or elimination of academic programs, courses, and/or student activities to meet the needs of the School in a regional and national context.
Participates in the operation of advisory groups for academic and student programs.
Documents, tracks, and maintains adequate, accurate, and most recent curriculum.
Prepares (or supervises preparation of) materials needed for consideration of new curricula by the Division Heads and the Head of School.
Qualifications
Master’s degree in a discipline appropriate to the management of learning in K-12 environments
Six or more years of experience in K-12 institutions
Experience in teaching and academic administration; minimum of three years of supervisory experience
Strong and demonstrated expertise in curriculum design, course and syllabi development, appropriate and effective teaching materials and methods
Research methodology in the evaluation of academic and student programming effectiveness
Experience leading and directing faculty and staff in a K-12 education environment
Experience with the management of operating budgets and plans
