Job Summary:

Reporting to the Vice President of Enrollment and Student Affairs, the Director of Safety and Security is responsible for the operations of the Safety and Security Department which operates on a 24/7 basis servicing the College of Saint Scholastica, the St. Scholastica Monastery, and the Benedictine Living Community. This includes supervision of physical safety and security operations, compliance with state or federal laws and/or regulations, and vehicle registration and parking enforcement. The Director develops, administers, and evaluates all safety and security functions, programs, and policies. This position also requires an operational awareness of best practices and national trends related to campus safety and security, and legal issues impacting higher education.

The Director proactively addresses safety and security concerns, implements action plans, and ensures related policies are consistently enforced. The Director will work in close collaboration with other departments to ensure regular fire, safety, and security inspections are conducted within all college and monastery facilities.  They will also assist in conducting investigations and coordinate all matters involving on property parking including the issuance and control of permits. 

In addition, the Director provides administrative and operational guidance for a departmental staff, including a Lead Safety and Security Officer, and a team of other Safety and Security Officers that the Director will join in day-to-day safety and safety and security coverage. The Director will also work closely with local emergency services. The Director will also work with the Title IX coordinator with investigations as necessary. Lastly the Director shall assist in the coordination of emergency response campus messaging with the marketing and communication team.

  • Assure compliance with all state and federal law and reporting requirements in a higher education.


Essential Job Duties: 
  • Oversee and maintain daily safety and security operations.
  • Assist the Lead Safety and Security Officer and the other Safety and Security Officers in the staffing of the day-to-day departmental coverage for the institution.     
  • Work with Lead Security Officer to adjust operations and resolve operational issues as they arise.
  • Collaborate with various campus departments and employees to assure safety and security goals are met and exceeded.
  • Maintain strong interpersonal connections with students, faculty, staff, and external guests.
  •  With the Lead Security Officer, assure that the proper industry standard training programs and requirements are implemented and maintained to meet departmental and institutional needs and expectations.
  • Develop and manage strong working relationships with external agencies and organizations (such as the Duluth Police Department) that support institutional safety and security operations.
  • Develop and present all safety & security related student-oriented programs and presentations.
  • Develop and maintain emergency operation plans for all buildings and events.
  • Investigate incidents in support of campus conduct and Title IX processes.
  • Support in the resolution of facilities-related incidents during non-business hours.
