Job Description As envisioned in the 2016 expansion plan for the Thurman Center, and outlined in the Boston University 2030 Strategic Plan, the Director of the Howard Thurman Center for Common Ground is responsible for developing and implementing cutting-edge initiatives to permeate Boston University communities with an ethos of common ground.
The Director will work with professional and student staff to bolster student engagement with expanded programming and robust experiential learning opportunities in coordination and collaboration with other campus offices and departments.
Maintaining the guiding principles for all Thurman Center programs and serving as the chief communicator of Howard Thurman's common ground philosophy, the Director is responsible for growing the Centers reputation on campus and nationally through speaking engagements and fundraising; launching new initiatives on the Charles River, Medical and Fenway campuses; strengthening existing learning! and training programs centered on social issues pertaining to race, culture, ethnicity, gender and gender identity; mentoring staff and providing professional development opportunities, guidance and support; coordinating with senior administration, the Senior Diversity Officer, and the Associate Provost for Community and Inclusion; fostering faculty engagement; and, hiring and supervising personnel.
The Director is also responsible for providing an annual report and assessment report of the Howard Thurman Center.
We seek a dynamic and goals-oriented individual who can work both independently and be part of a team. Must have comfort working with ambiguity and in a fast-paced work setting. Must be able to work with all types of students. Flexibility a must.
Required Skills Requirements:
Master's degree in a related field required with at least ten years of progressively responsible experience.
Engagement with students and the campus community that includes a strong, visible presence and active participation in a range of student interests and activities
Capacity to communicate broadly across the University, cultivate and sustain collegial relationships, and bring people together around difficult issues
Ability to thrive in a lean, decentralized environment.
Ability to mentor, develop, inspire, and support staff, and provide successful oversight of people and budgets, and space
Ability to actively engage and partner with faculty
Knowledge of and ability to address student affairs trends in higher education, especially related to race, ethnicity, culture, and LGBTQ issues
A demonstrated track record of advancing pluralism and enhancing inclusiveness with an ability to bring groups and individuals to common ground across lines of difference
Adept at working well with all members of the academic community, including staff, faculty, students and senior-level administrators and leaders
Demonstrated ability to take initiative and operate in a proactive, and (sometimes creative) solution-oriented manner
Possesses openness, responsiveness, approachability and understanding of other perspectives with the demonstrated ability to maintain and build relationships through collaboration
Strong belief in the power of young people
