Position Summary

Under general direction of the area supervisor and in partnership with Faculty Advancement and Student Success, the primary responsibilities of the General Academic Advisor position are: 1) create a supportive and caring advising environment, 2) evaluate students' records toward undergraduate degree requirements, 3) conduct proactive advising outreach to advise and counsel students on their individual academic success plan, and 4) review student files in SDSU Navigate (EAB) and degree evaluations to monitor progress.

The General Academic Advisor will apply a proactive, holistic approach to advising students in general education, major, minor, and graduation requirements; review and maintain working knowledge of designated major requirements; refer to appropriate student support services offices and student engagement offices for co-curricular opportunities; report on student advising appointments in SDSU Navigate (EAB) to ensure accurate student progress is maintained; provide guidance to students experiencing diverse successes and challenges and provide appropriate support and/or referrals within area and across Academic and Student Affairs-Campus Diversity divisions; review student records in SDSU Navigate; and utilize other appropriate campus advising tools to facilitate progress toward degree completion.

The General Academic Advisor will be a member of a diverse community of General Academic Advisers who will serve as role models for our diverse student community and who have a demonstrated commitment to the academic success of our students.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position anticipated to end one year from the date of appointment, with the possibility of reappointment. This position is designated as exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

The College of Arts and Letters (CAL) has 18 academic departments, nine interdisciplinary programs, 22 centers, the Social Science Research Laboratory, and one joint doctoral program. With nearly 500 permanent faculty and associated lecturers, the College is the largest of the seven colleges at San Diego State University and is responsible for 36% of the instruction at the University. The Office of the Assistant Dean for Students Affairs consists of one Assistant Dean, one SSP III, two SSP II, and one Administrative Support Coordinator I.

The Office of the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs/CAL Student Success Center offers a comprehensive range of services to students in the College of Arts and Letters. The office takes a student-centered approach in its efforts to help students, endeavoring to give each student as much individualized attention as possible. Since student issues often extend beyond the purview of this office, the staff maintain constant communication with all campus entities in order to provide students with the best possible assistance. The mission of this office is to enhance the student's college experience by providing assistance that will support the student's primary educational goal: attaining a degree.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown below may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Possession of the required knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A Master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Key Qualifications
  • A Master's degree in student personnel, higher education/student affairs, counseling or related field is preferred.
  • Experience advising a diverse group of students along the academic spectrum including, promising students, students in the middle or high achieving students.
  • Experience utilizing SDSU Navigate advising (EAB) and other academic advising tools.
  • Knowledge of a variety of academic disciplines in terms of course requirements and career paths.
  • Two years of experience in interpreting and explaining academic policies governing public or private university admissions is preferred.
  • Two years of experience working in a college or university's admissions, advising, evaluations, registrar or other student service-related office is preferred.
  • Experience in fostering or has demonstrated commitment to underrepresented student success.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $4,610 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,610 - $6,556 per month.
